Fried OT, anyone?

Post by owen291 » Thu Aug 26, 2004 4:26 am

I resoldered some loose solder joint in my amp last night. After finishing up, I turned the amp on, warmed it up for about 2 mins. then plugged in my guitar. No sound. I raised the volume to about 5. Still no sound. I looked @ the back and realized I forgot to plug in the speaker! I immediately turned the amp off and connected the speaker. The amp came back on and it sounded OK @ low volume. I didn't have the chance to crank it up since it's late. I'm afraid I might have damaged my OT.

Yikes!

This is always a nail biting experience. I still do it from time to time.
Fortunately, those 100 watt trannies can handle a short amount of time with no load. If you had done any serious damage, you might have noticed that characteristic burning wire smell that always accompanies transformer damage.
I've got my fingers crossed that you didn't smell anything......

Chances are, you're OK. Let us know.

With two Marshalls and a baby in the house, and only one Weber MASS between them, I've accidentally forgotten which amp has speaker cables plugged in, or had them not plugged in far enough, etc. I've not blown an OT yet, but I'm a quick draw with the Standby switch when there's no sound....
If you're a quick draw too, you're probably OK.

Good : No burning smell here.
Bad : I had the amp on for a good 3 minutes (@ least 2 min on standby and it took me another minute to troubleshoot the "no sound problem").
Btw, it's a 50w amp. Now I'm sad but I'm still hopeful.

Your time on standby shouldn't have bothered it anyway -- you're not running any high voltage to that tranny until you flip the standby on. So you really only sat there for maybe a minute with no load on an energized tranny.
