HELP!!!!!!!! NO GAIN

Post by dirtydeeds22 » Mon Nov 22, 2004 1:14 am

My fire breathing dragon is tame!!!!!!!! I fired up my plexi tonight and with it cranked all I can get is clean sound. No gain whatsoever. I've recently changed all the pre-amp and power tubes, changed all the caps to Sozo's and changed a volume pot. That's it. Any suggestions to what this problem could be?

Thanks
Jeff

Start with tubes. Replace your new preamp tubes with your old ones and see what happens. If a new tube is going fail outright, it will do it in the first hours of use.

You didn't change out any plate resistors for new?
I got the same result when I accidentally slipped a 10K resistor on a plate instead of 100K. Those damn tiny color bands kill me every time.

So I checked everything out, and after putting my old pre and power tubes back in, and it still did it. I pulled the chasis out and checked for cold solder joints. None. Then while I had the chasis out I plugged in and IT WORKED!!!!. I put it all back together, then plugged in, and NO GAIN!!!!!!! FUCK  . Backtracking, I plugged into my pedal board and checked every connection, and found the wah pedal was on. I checked it and the switch is sticking. THANK GOD!!!!!. Everything is working fine. Thanks for responding.

Just a great reminder of the first principle of trouble shooting. Simplify everything and seperate all components checking each.

How many times have I done the same thing ?

Another lesson. Little kids will play with your gear if its available to them.
Anything with knobs, lights, or switches is like candy to 2 and 3 year olds, they can't resist. I think that's how the wah pedal was turned on. My bad

Restless curiosity. I remember my parents were having their usual summer party and this todler somehow got up into my room and started messing with my guitar case. I almost lost it, but managed to keep my cool... whew!
