Strange sounding '72 Super P.A.

Post by lindum52 » Thu Mar 18, 2004 11:04 am

Hi there,
Having bought a bargain 1972 Super P.A. head (model # 1968), I'm a bit worried about the sound that it makes when switching on. Taking the amp out of standby, there is an odd whooshing sound that runs through the speakers for about 5 seconds. It sounds like the amp is getting comfortable, or its stomach is rumbling!! Definately a bit weird. Considering the amp is over 30 years old, I was expecting this kind of problem, but I don't want to keep playing it until I know what this is.

The amp looks to be completely original (except for some changed pots), but has slight surface rust on the transformers. The presence and treble controls work when they want to (scratchy and need wiggling to get them into the right position).

What do you reckon guys!?

Congratulations on a great find! Those PA heads are real sleepers for guitar.

You should have your filter caps checked out post haste. That's the place to start.
