Has anyone here installed power scaling in their Plexi?

Post by J.DavisNJ » Wed Dec 12, 2007 3:19 pm

I am jonesing for a Superbass soooo bad, but need some type of volume control. Either a PPIMV or power scaling. The MV seems like the easier route, but power scaling is intriguing as well.

Basically, I want something with a smooth taper. Not something that goes from 1 to loud in an instant.

Has anyone installed the London kit in a Plexi yet? Pics? Thoughts?

And George, if you see this: Do you have any plans in the future to adapt these kits into your amps? thanks.

There's a few guys on here that have dome something along those lines. I've "Marshallised" an old Traynor YBA1 ( 2 el34s) and installed Powerscaling in it.
As of a few days ago London power has gome to what Kevin O calls DC-powerscaling . It has some intriguing posibilities over the older styling. The concept works well. I've put the Larry/Rocksta PPIV MV into it and I'm very happy.

This won't be a problem with a PPIMV. I don't have first-hand experience with power scaling but I'm sure it's smooth too.

There are probably advantages to each. Based on what I've read about power scaling, an MV would be much easier to install.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I was poking around there earlier.

Cool, as long as a master will give me a smooth taper, I'm golden. Not that they are incredibly similar, but my JVM had the smoothest master volume ever. It worked soooooooo well. If I can get that with a Superbass I'll be a happy camper.

I have the Larry/Mark PPIMV in a 100w and the volume taper is very smooth from barely audible to wide open. No problems and sounds great. :D

Awesome...

I read through some of that thread, it seems like a great mod.

Any idea how it's different from George's PPIMV? If I install it, I'm gonna need a diagram. I'm schematic retarded. :-D

George's PPIMV kit is the "Rich mod" MV which apparently sounds a little different. I haven't tried that version. The lar/mar is a little easier to install and most people think it sounds more like a typical NMV Marshall.

Spend some time in that thread. Any questions you have are probably already answered there:

Here's a diagram of the "lar/mar":

FWIW, I've tried several MVs on Marshalls an the L/R PPIMV is the best one I've used to date. It'll tame a 100W to the point of not pissing off the neighbors and/or killing your ears but still sound good.

I'm sure the power scaling is cool but I don't see why it's worth the effort to install it when you can add the PPIMV for $5 in parts and a half hour (max) of your time.

do you mean you used the larry mv as the drive comp? i was curious how this would sound over the regular master volume in a power scaled amp.

Yup! It beats the crossline arrangement thast is supplied with the kit. I just like to eliminate those extra coupling caps.
