Cathode Bypass cap out of spec, replace or not?

Post by greengriff » Tue May 12, 2020 8:52 am

Hi All,

First post so please be nice! I just picked up a 1977 2103 and want to ensure it's good for another 40 years. It's all original with mustards etc. and I have some cap related questions.

All caps were measured in circuit with a dedicated capacitance meter.

The .68uf cathode bypass actually reads .486. I'd like opinions on whether that's far enough out to warrant replacing? The lower value should make the amp a bit more trebly right?

The .1uf presence cap reads .07. Again, leave or replace, what are the tonal effects?

All the 0.022uf bar one were bang on 0.022, which is pretty impressive.

The filter cans (both side read in parallel as they are wired in circuit) all read around 160uf bar one which reads 103. A known good loose one that I had to hand measures 100.8.

Bias supply caps read 12.9 and 13.3 respectively. To change or not? I would say yes but am keen to hear other opinions.

Has measuring in circuit given me false readings do you think?

Thanks!
