rewinding blown output transformer

Post by rockabilly daniel » Mon Oct 18, 2004 3:22 pm

The dagnall output transformer in my 79 2203 blew. Does anyone know of a good place to get it rewound? Also, how much does it usually cost? As far as new replacements go, is there anything other options besides the mecury magnetics and the heoyber transformers? Thanks

You need to know that saying you're having your transformer rewound is misleading. What they do is take your blown trans apart and document the windings. Then they make a new tranformer from those specs and put your old end covers on it.

MM has done this to many transformers. That's where the specs come from for their replacements.

I'm sure Heyboer could also do this for you. Their specs came about this way too.

Would it be better to just replace it? I'm not concerned about vintage value as much as I am playability. I need it to be reliable for gigs. Which would be the more reliable, longer lasting route? A rewind or a straight replacement. It seems kind of silly to have it "rewound" if all they are doing is copying the specs since there are already copies available. Which is the more budget concious route?
