Re: all the bells and whistles
So, from your diagram, the white is the CT, correct?
This is what came with the ClasiicTone 50 watt tranny. The Black common has a dot in the corner but so does the upper Blue on the primary, with the white in the middle.

not sure what the dot is but yes, per that diagram, the white should be the CT.

Tell me about it brother. two days back to back of trouble sleeping. Up and at em at 5am...
Here's the latest. OT secondaries corrected (PITA with shorter leads!), screens complete, filter board grounded Larry style and installed.

CM trannies have 2 center bolts instead of 4 corner bolts.

Re: all the bells and whistles
My mounting ring had the extra holes so I added 6. I got a few of the mounting rings from Marstran a while back with the 6 holes.

Re: all the bells and whistles
A couple reasons:vanhalen5150 wrote:Why the carbon comp grids?
1)The guy I'm building this for asked to shoot for WACF tone. That record has serious balls, brown, a ton of hair and grit. So I'm mixing in a few NOS ccs that should be slightly grittier than films. I should be able to dial in the right amount of grit and hair with the NFB circuit when its all done.
2)NOS mojo...
Edit: My understanding is a resistor's effect on tone increases with current flow and resistive value (heat....). 5.6k is relatively low and so is the current flow so the noise difference should be minimal on these. I believe the first stage is much more sensitive to component construction.

Re: all the bells and whistles
Ben's amp had 2w 1.5k CC's and I regreted taking them out. I ended up putting back allot of CC's and it really added some anger to the tone that was pretty nice. I think we are the only two that have the VZ at this point, it will blow your mind!

Re: all the bells and whistles
I have one ordered for another chassis I have. May as well start collecting parts now. I'd like to try something different in the PT. I've heard good stuff about the ClassicTone 100 watt PT's. The iron is NOS from planet Krypton they say.....

Re: all the bells and whistles
I've been studying WACF tone and boy is it nasty! Much dirtier than VHII. I populated v1 last night with all Iskras and I'm wondering if there should be a mix of CCs. wasnt there a rumor that he had 2 ccs that drifted from 820 to 1.1k? my plan is to put a stake in the ground and listen, then tweak to taste but i'm trying to minimize resolders to keep it neat.
there's a lot less high end on that record and its less compressed so i threw the electrolytic on v2a. He'll be playing it with a custom custom which i think will work nicely with this to get more warmth down low. We'll have to see if a variac in necessary.
thoughts?

Re: all the bells and whistles
That tone is most likely the DF specs with a fat cap I would think. The mix resistors sound good with CC's and the V2B 100k cathode resistor too. Actually try the Piher 790k resistor there, that might make it pretty gainy. Just get her up and running first and broken in, then start fine tuning it. Do you have pics of the board with the Iskras? What's the choke again?
