questions about recording clips

Hello everyone . I have no experience with any kind of recording at all and am wondering if there is an economical way of recording clips of my amp. i thought it would be a great way to compare componets,tubes cabinets ect. But have no idea even wher to start . As always any imput is appreciated. Thanks Clint

Well first of all, you have to have some kind of microphone. The Shure SM57 is a popular choice and you can't really go wrong with that. Then you need an usb interface. I'd recommend some form of the M-Audio fast track because with those you get a cool limited edition of pro tools, a professional recording software. That setup would be pretty cool plug and play type, and doesn't cost you a fortune either.

I have a mic. not a Sure but i think its comparable. Think it will work I used to use it to mic my amp through pa. Can you tell me more about the M audio fast track ; how it works and where to get one ,ect . thanks again Clint

Well you basically plug your mic into it and then plug your computer to the unit via usb cable. :) Then you open pro tools and hit rec. Fast tracks are pretty common, your local music store should have them.

I usually record through an SM57 to our bands mixer and from there to my computer. The fast track probably actually is better than a regular mixer for this kind of stuff. :)
