I thought the evh were relabeled heritages? Or was that sorted out somewhere?
We have these newer production speaks
Heritage 20watt
Evh black back
Webers
Celestion classic
The celestion JH (the vox/marshall rep stated in person to me these are the same as classics that are in the VM cabs)
6402 Reissues
53-h1777 reissues (I have these and have no wants for any more speaks-they o workin for me)
H1777 reissues
Chinese reissues
Scumbacks
What else new production??
If you could do 4 lineups at a time-then take all the winners from those for the final lineup that would be schweet.
I have heard some good h30 clips but I never get it on with them personally for VH-thorn did his atbl thing on one of them. Theres the heritage and anniversary of them as well as evh version.
Thats alot of speakerage!

Personally if I had to pick one speaker to cover my ass for eveything it would be the 6402's. They are the Swiss Army of speakers. They don't do eveything perfect by any means but they sound great with a lot of different amps and guitars.

I had a 6402 3 years ago ,at the time I compared it to the weber 1225 greenback and my original pre rola greenback as well as the m75.. It was a cool speaker but did not sound like any of them to me!!!'

I have 6402's. I sold myJCM800 cab back in like '95 or something.I got it new in '90(was probably a '89?). AllI knew was that I really loved the tone and that it had 25 watt greenbacks. I went through a big blues/funk type thing from mid '90's to the early millenium (strats and clean amps & stompboxes). I discovered this place and heard Ralle
. I saw how Rockstah dumped his blackbacks and went for what Ralle was using (6402's). I did my research and discovered that my ,sold
JCM 800 cab had the 6402's. I figured out why the newer Marshall 4/12's didnt sound as good
. I found another old JCM800 loaded with 6402's
. I agree about how they sound great through any amp/guitar combination. And how they sound TOPS through certain specs (2203/2204,Mod5,etc).

Funny you should mention the ATBL tone specifically...that's my favorite VH I tone that I always try to achieve!!bmf5150 wrote:Thank ill record something else, I hear ya on ATBL it's just a tone I shoot for!!! I think the recorded clips sounds more alike and in the room the speakers difference is much more!

I think its those slamming palm mutes in the intro that just sounds so huge and powerful. Ka Chunka Supreme!
but the whole album is my fave. Especially ITO. The amp just flat out is frying balls out like its on an overdose of Nitrous.
Fast, furious, clear and tight yet so frayed out at the same time.

Yeah, those palm muted notes sounds very unique through a plexi , no other amp has that unique sound!i guess it's the bench mark I use!

Re: speaker comparison, which one you like?need your opinion.
That compression is not "studio" trickery.
Alot of 12series style amps easily deliver that type of thing. And this is the big turd in the "cascaded gain stage" punch bowl.
Theres a clarity of pick attack .....gain is secondary to this aspect in the arena.
I think it has to do with volume and the circuit at which its all funneled down.
Get them speakers moving volume-forget the gain-and you will see clearly "punchy kick you in the balls" pick attack.
Sure you can dick with compressors and get that pop on the attack-but... it isn't the same. You know the part where Ed was interviewed and talks about "feeling it in the chest"??
Thats the ticket to phat ass tone. Solid slam in the chest volume compression from both -how the speakers and output section work together.

I can't or don't know how to post a link from my droid but Google Pete Thorn ain't talking bout and there is a mp3 lizard link on Huge Racks Inc where he nailed the ever livin piss out of that tone with the Variplex. Even Rockstah was awed.
So Pete would be probably the best to give his opinion on how much the process in the studio adds overall.
Maybe he even has some of the mic pre/compressor settings for reference and can elborate on how much it added.

Here is the post where he details the amp, in-line effects, recording chain, etc...
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showpo ... tcount=107" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If I understand him correctly, there is no "studio-ization" going on at all. Is a mic preamp considered studio-izing?
Also, bmf5150 himself has posted a clip before where the palm mutes are also definately a-popping

Re: speaker comparison, which one you like?need your opinion.
(Hopefully there is a plethora of speakers such as the 6402 among others on their way to stans for more clips as we kill time on this thread and soak it in)
But yeah-this isn't the full skinny on Petes stab at this. Obviously variac or not he is not cranking a plexi into one 30wattt sepaker so there is an attenuator someplace lurking... the delay was dual at 100 and 300 ms if I recall... and it mentions nothing bout the mic pre or mic used but I know its detailed more somewhere.
I am dumbfounded its an h30 speaker. I fricken hate h30's !! But he is makin babies with it here

efraser68 wrote:That's some sour grapes right there. You may have a point about #3 but to say that the riff isn't being played properly is ridiculous. This is an open amp forum, not yours to deligate who can and can't post demos. I don't question whether your speakers are great or not. They sound awesome in this demo.Scumback Speakers wrote:bmf5150: there are significant issues with this speaker comparison, IMO, which you should take note of.
1) You can't dial in an EQ for one speaker without dialing out something else in the other three. Tried that myself with Pete Thorn, it doesn't work.
2) There are way too many extraneous and unnecessary signal modifications in this rig. No one does a proper speaker comparison with all of the signal changes you have used in this comparison. There's no way to tell what EQ unit settings, what microphone/placement guidelines, home made attenuator and amp line out changes do to the original signal. You've got way too much crap in the signal chain before it gets to the microphone.
3) Not every speaker responds to the same mic placement equally well, or in other words, placing the mic in the same spot doesn't guarantee good results with every speaker, even if they're all G12M variants. You have to dial in each speaker by itself, then set the EQ for each one. There is not one EQ that works for all of these speakers.
4) Learn how to play the songs you're playing for a demonstration, or hire someone who can play them properly.
Frankly, I'd just prefer you don't use my speakers in any of your "demos" in the future. Leave it to the pros, that's what I do. You should, too.
+1 Jim doesn't seem like he can handle other speaker sounding better.

Re: speaker comparison, which one you like?need your opinion.
WTF? The pre-rola sounded the worse to my ears. Rigid, stiff, nasally. Not at all what I'd expect. Are they re-coned or repaired? It's very difficult to tell but it also sounds like there are other changes in the chain other than just the speakers. The overall EQ-ing doesn't sound right either for the 1st VH record. Overall, it's a good tone and for the set used, my choice of speaker for this comparison would have to be the M-75.
