This is how Eric Johnson used to do his old strats (I'm told) so that he didn't have to plane vintage necks.vanhalen5150 wrote:No, the necks were not shaved down. The frets were in the middle. You can add jumbo frets up higher. File down the middle and then recrown them to simulate a compound radius. The neck itself still stays the same.Rich_D wrote:I just got what you're saying. You think he had his necks shaved up higher for bending, sort of like a compound radius? Obviously Hendrix doesn't fret out even on a 2 1/2 step bend. Should this have been impossible with a stock strat of that era?vanhalen5150 wrote:Some of Hendrix's guitars look like they where refreted with huge jumbo's, radiused down in the middle and then recrowned.

Re: Evolution of Ed's neck profiles
I'd say 5'8". Probably more like 165 now.
Back to the EBMM...if anyone has played a B or C series Kramer with the beak headstock then you know that the EBMM was digitized from this. It is a 1 5/8ths nut with a big C profile worn down on the treble side.

Satriani...totally average. When he plays you just think they must be big.
One of the forum members here a few years ago put his hands over Ed's sidewalk cement impression. Who was that? They were surprised at how average they were.

Re: Evolution of Ed's neck profiles
Awesome! Thanks for the neck info. Now I'm really gonna have to try to find a maple beak neck Focus to turn into a Franky! Thought they'd be hard to find. They are. Thinking I'd buy a Franky body and use the neck and hardware from the Kramer.rdodson wrote:I'd say 5'8". Probably more like 165 now.

Did I mention how much I like the EBMM neck? Love it!

Re: Evolution of Ed's neck profiles
The Franky had a different type of beak neck on it. 1 3/4" medium C. The regular retail beaks (Kramer Pacers) were MUCH smaller. All had R2 nuts. Then everything changed with the hockey stick necks.

Well this certainly clears everything up.
Signed, Totally Confused.
Just kidding. I was hoping to learn how Eddie progressed from the B&W Frankie next to the latest version of his production guitar. I greatly admire the way Eddie never sits on a design or an idea. Still, it's hard to chart the evolution of his preferences such as with necks.

Well...he changed his preferences I guess. The EBMM guitar was based on the "5150" Kramer which had a neck from a production Kramer Pacer beak neck which they hacked up to be the hockey stick.
So...if you find a B or C series Kramer beak, you are golden. I have 2 at the house.

That's the interesting part for me.rdodson wrote:Well...he changed his preferences I guess.
Ok cool. That corresponds to that awkward video interview from right after the Kramer deal where he's gushing over the Kramer necks. Thanks for all the posts.rdodson wrote:The EBMM guitar was based on the "5150" Kramer which had a neck from a production Kramer Pacer beak neck which they hacked up to be the hockey stick.
