To me, Randy was far better writing songs than playing.
Have you ever heard anything live from RR? If He wasn't clean at solos, tell me who is. :palm: :palm:
The studio tone was discussed here before and yes it was bad engineered, but his live tones were KILLER. Tons of punch and sustain, way more defined and less fizzy.

I've been hearing some live footage today and he wasn't as perfect as I read here. Sorry guys
The tempo isn't always very accurate and the bends aren't always in tune. Maybe most of the dirt that I heard is caused but the heavy pick attack of his guitar sound.
Playing similar style, Yngwie blows him. Even Zakk plays Randy's stuff more precise than Randy.
Don't misunderstand me, I like very much Randy's playing, but he isn't as good playing live as other guitar monsters.

And, I have a question. Can anybody explain why Eddie's sound is called BROWN?
If I think in a brown sound I imagine a creamy, round and warm sound. Something like Warren Haynes, and Eddie is the opposite, it's more "razor sound" :)
Be carefull, it's an EVH forum :hide: :hide: :hide:

I know that I'm like an heretic here...

It's called brown in the very opposite of your definition... dirty, with a pack of mud over (in a good way) , harsh, thick, spongy , but AWESOME and LEGENDARY. By no means I hear RAZOR SOUND in early VH, but describe tone with words is such a bitch sometimes.
It's hard to describe sound with words, yeah, but I think that brown remembers something like chocolate, sweet and warm. It was just curiosity :)
Maybe razor was too much, but you said it: harsh, thick.
It isn't awesome or legendary to me, but who cares?
