Not taking sides here just saying my own experience is that I can play a harder right hand (hit the strings harder) with a medium pick than I can with a hard pick. Lighter than medium, no way -- play hard and it's just a mess. Heavy gauge and it's just too hard -- out of pitch and strangely less consistent (for me) across all the strings. I hear Ed hitting hard but with an incredible amount of control -- sort of as hard as you can hit without everything going bad. I think higher action helps with that too.

Have any of you notice a difference in tone dropping from 10's to 9's? I've pretty much hunted most of the early evh kit but I've played 10's for years so I'm reluctant to change down unless there's a tonal benefit.

Yes. You will sound and feel closer to Ed's playing if you switch to .009s. At least that was my experience.

Thanks, think it's time to go over to the other side :)

+1 huge difference with 9s feel-wise and tone-wise. Volume makes up for the beef 10s seem to have, and notes with 9s have more "air" around them. YMMV

100% correct. An excellent way to describe what happens...
