Re: Official post your frankenstrat thread - LET's See THem!
Cary, The MK necks are the ducks guts IMO (aged oil is a must to "start" the aging process ) The franky pictured is a MK Franky neck 10" radius the body is a pre azuza MK franky body. I used this because the pre Azuza KNE bodies contours were incorrect. Specifically the lower horn. However now I would use a KNE Azuza as the contours are correct, the neck pocket is a great snug fit and in the most recent VH1 I did no shim was required when using a flush mount OFR.
Some of the MK necks require a little sanding of the nut shelf in order to bring the action down to the required level, in order to do this correctly I use an old lock nut with 250 sandpaper double sided taped to the bottom, trim with a stanley knife, and put a locknut screw in the middle tread in the top of the nut to use as a handle. slide grently back and forth keeping everything secure and level.
Reflectors Ebay, paint any old acrylic paint ( helps with aging) use off white not stark white, pick your red of choice, matt black.
Cheers
Flex

Cary - I'll PM you a link and some details, being as I don't want to be disrespectful to this forum (though there's only very limited crossover of into).
The body & neck are Frankenstraat - I seemed to beat the odds at the time by getting my parts in reasonable time where some others waited even longer... go figure.
I'll PM that info now - happy to answer questions here as well, of course.
Cheers.

I would NEVER put a floyd Rose on a black and white Franky clone (like the one a few posts above). That era Van Halen tone was achieved using a 6 screw vintage Fender tremelo. I prefer the pre floyd VH to the post for sure, and find it amazing that NONE of the Van Halen tribute bands guitarist use a vintage style tremelo. I guess VERY VERY few people know how to keep them in tune properly.

Well, if the standard tremolo was that good, Eddie would have kept it. For some reason he went into Floyds and never looked back. I think it just makes the job a whole lot easier. That way, you have more time to play instead of tuning after each song like you can hear him do it on Live at Pasadena Civic. If he didn't paint the guitar red, today it would be a black and white Franky with a Floyd, that was inevitable.

I actually briefly spoke of that same question to the guy pictured above from Fan Halen...He is a Floyd adherent too, and I can't blame him-he's a super nice guy and is just having fun. It took me several years to figure out how to keep my old strat tremolo in tune-this was decades before the internet-and even though there are lots of methods and instructions/tips for people to utilize that are available online, I too believe that there are few in Van Halen tribute bands that would bother.Tone Slinger wrote:I would NEVER put a floyd Rose on a black and white Franky clone (like the one a few posts above). There are many professional players that do stick to standard strat tremolos out there-including our own Pete Thorn who could be the world's greatest Van Halen tribute "Eddie"...I have always approached learning songs using the closest equipment that I could find to what was used on a particular record. When I was learning the first three albums I used my standard strat and a Les Paul to cover what was played with the Frankenstein/Ibanez Destroyer. I used my Kramer with an old Floyd Rose when I learned things that were played with the Frankenstein or other guitars with Floyd Rose systems...
I can totally understand tribute bands using just one guitar for everything because it is less to keep track of in a live situation...I would be really impressed and give an A+++ to any Van Halen tribute bands that whipped out standard trem Frankie clones, Destroyers, Flying V's, Ripleys, etc. for all the tracks as recorded, but I think that is asking too much

Re: Official post your frankenstrat thread - LET's See THem!
All you guy's guitars look great!
For the guys that have Floyds on their frankies...
Are the bodies routed in the back such that the floyd is already blocked?
That is, is the trem block sitting flush against the wood? or do you have to
block it by putting a bracket or a piece of wood such that you can only dive
on the tremolo?
I'm thinking of putting together an Ed inspired guitar and was wondering
if I can get a body pre-routed to have that kind of tremolo setup, or If
I would have to buy an unrouted body and somehow get it routed to
that spec...

Re: Official post your frankenstrat thread - LET's See THem!
LISTEN dudes ! Thats all. Eddie sounded his BEST with the Fender Bridge. And being honest, stayed in tune better as well (before the fine tuners that is). A floyd Rose neuters a WHOLE LOT of tone. It basically will make a strat take on a GIBSON type thing (more 'straight foward' less resonate type vibe). The twang and 'bounce' of a strat is TOTALLY lost.
Today, we KNOW how to get at Ed's early tone, 'cause back in the day, even he lost track of it. He started using the WRONG speakers live ('80 ) then actually started using loads and solid state power amps.
Ed, using a floyd at his best (Fair Warning up to Diver Down (though that one wasnt as polished production wise) ), just didnt sound nearly as good as he did with the Fender bridge.
TONE is WAY MORE than the amp. The guitar is second in line to the player. The amp is third.
I actually feel REAL BAD that ED fucked up the guitar he used on ERUPTION by putting a floyd on it. Chords ring with less authority and palm mutes sound anemic, when comparing a floyd to a Fender bridge.
Rockstah and Thorn sound WAY better than all the other FLOYD ROSE players because they use Vintage style tremelo's (and can basically 'outplay' everyone else

You nailed it, Tone Slinger. I completely agree with your analysis- I couldn't have summed it up any better. I have thought that very thing for decades. The large steel sustain blocks in vintage-style Strat vibratos are also sorely missing today- coEddie sounded his BEST with the Fender Bridge.

Re: Official post your frankenstrat thread - LET's See THem!
Tele-Stein EVH-style is still lurking on Craigslist (new re-post today- it's not mine either). I hope the guys at EVH Inc. don't get all jealous over somebody making a striped guitar theirselves, then deciding to get rid of it, "robbing" them of a sale they think they might have made... Anyway, it has a few cool pics of Franken-madness to enjoy...

By the way, nice Divebomb- thank God, it's got a stock-style vibrato...
