Another big mystery,
WHAT WAS THE STATE OF THE FRANKY as it was used on VH1 ?
I hear a different neck and pick up as compared to the '78 tour 'FAMOUS' striped Franky.

Correct, But the strat body and neck have the 60 to 63 specs with a 65 to 66 Logo sloppily placed.garbeaj wrote:The other thing is that there was no vintage guitar market back then. My uncle bought my '68 maple neck Olympic White strat for around $280 in 1971. It is entirely possible that Ed could have bought a used guitar. The headstock decals in the late 50's and early 60's Fenders sometimes came off...Jimmy Page's 'Dragon' Telecaster originally had a standard Fender logo on it when Jeff Beck gave it to him in 1966 (it was a '59 or thereabout), but it began to come off until he perhaps eventually peeled it off. I don't know if they didn't shoot enough laquer on the headstock or what, but it could be that Ed had a real strat and the logo came off which he then replaced with a crappy copy that he put on haphazardly. Or it could be that he got a decent Japanese copy and had it set up well by a competent tech. Who knows?
EVH did not know a lot about Vintage guitars and there was not a big vintage market back then..this is probably the guitar he was referring to as a 58 in interviews not knowing it was a 60 to 63.

Different neck or the same neck with the fake Fender logo sanded off?evhguitars wrote:Not the same neck.leadguy wrote:

I don't know, because I havn't done a comparison between the 1977 Musikfoto Rosewood neck and the 1979? Franky Rosewood neck.

Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
I think maybe it was a early '60's strat. I'm not sure, but the 3 ply pick guard, rosewood board, etc, didnt that come out in '58 or was it '59 ? That could put it from '58 or '59 to no later than '65, that is if the neck was original to the body (the big 'CBS' headstocks came into play by late '65 I think).
This would make sense, and also back up Ed's claim of really messing with the pu's position. In the Sun Burst Strat, Ed had the pu a bit further away from the bridge, whereas on the all black Franky it was (HB'er) real close to the bridge, and the B&W striped Franky it was brought back away from the bridge a tad.
The Sun Burst Strat is probably where Ed got the 6 screw tremelo from.

That strat is a '61. It's in a Guitar World mag from a few years ago, where the Fender guys are talking about building the Fender Frank. I'm pretty sure they'd know the year.

How would the Fender guys know? They never had any of Ed's original guitars to work from when they built the Frankenstein and they certainly didn't have the sunburst strat or the black strat/possible Frankenstein guitar...they just used photographs like every other builder out there.vanhalen5150 wrote:That strat is a '61. Didn't have the Frank?garbeaj wrote:How would the Fender guys know? Yeah , they had the original Frank.Thats been well known for years. Took the entire thing apart. Checked the PU. It's even actually sitting on the bench in some of the photo's. In an old thread here I think as well. Discussed to death.
They say that guitar in the photo is a '61...I don't see any reason to doubt the guys at Fender that they wouldn't know. "Lets just say it's a '61?" I'm thinking if guys that built Fender Strats see an old Strat and say, yeah, that's a 1961, there are reasons they would identify it being so.

I don't know, maybe Jose built Ed a time machine and it's actually a 2013 Strat, and Fender/Ed are keeping it a secret until its big release next year?
Seriously..what would you guys believe? Ed's secret pedal was made from an alien spacecraft that crashed in New Mexico?

Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
Ed said that they made the the thing from pictures and that he never actually gave them the guitar in the promo interviews...I guess I remember the interviews incorrectly?
As far as the Fender guys not knowing Fender guitars...they don't know shit because they are just a bunch of young guys...not Leo Fender or Abigail Ybarra or anyone else that was building them at the time and I doubt that they have any level of expertise in identifying from a photograph what year that guitar was...
Do you have a link or a date for this interview where the Fender guys discuss the Jenny Lens black guitar or the sunburst strat?

Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
The first one they made was from pics. The rest where made after he gave them the Frank. They still messed up a few things up like the reflectors , arm cutaway etc...
It's all in a lost thread here..if only there were sub topics....

Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
It's in the interveiw for the Frank. There is a pic of the sunburst strat. Says "61 Strat". Yeah, there are young guys working there but there are also guys working there for the last 30 years. There is probably something about that denotes it as a 61.garbeaj wrote:Ed said that they made the the thing from pictures and that he never actually gave them the guitar in the promo interviews...I guess I remember the interviews incorrectly?

I have seen that thread and read the threads here about the sunburt and the black strat and Franky, but I am unconvinced. There are great points brought up, but nothing conclusive, for me at least.JimiJames wrote:See some familiar names here...

Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
This sunburst strat...is it possible that the sunburst strat that they are referring to is actually the maple neck sunburst strat used on "Best of Both Worlds" and the solo on "When It's Love"? I know jim1647/jimi22814 says the sunburst in the Musikfoto pictures is the same guitar as the black strat, and I really respect his opinion...but as for the Fender guys, not so much.vanhalen5150 wrote:It's in the interveiw for the Frank.
