Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
In the Guitar World interviews, he talks about using a strat and routing it out for a humbucker...I presume the sunburst. He then talks about getting the body from Charvel...I presume the black that is Franky.
So, I know people have their opinions. That is mine: 2 guitars burst and black. Burst came first then black transformed to Franky.
Then the Roswell pedal.

It is not a 100% fact...but a good case has been made in the thread that leadguy posted above...kennzo5150 wrote:Holy shit the black guitar is Frankie?!?!

I may have to change my opinion. Look at the lower horn and the missing paint, that looks very familiar.

If you watch that morphing photo of the sunburst above, it eventually turns into Tiny Tim's Ukelele and then the symbol guitar formaly known as Prince.
It takes about 3 hours, so keep watching and don't look away.

I've been staring for 3 hours; is it just because my computer is slow? Should I keep going?
Interpretation?! I thought I was playing it right!

Re: When did Ed first start usin a Strat ?
I guess the idea is that he just masked off the already black guitar with the various sizes of tape and then shot the white paint over the guitar, inclding creating that little "moustache" and then voila you have the Frankenstein minus the maple neck...this would be the only expalanation if the gouges are indeed the same and this is the same guitar as the Frankenstein.rgorke wrote:I may have to change my opinion. But then that would mean that the sunburst is NOT the Frankenstein...there is no way that he would just tape over the gouges in the sunburst strat (which would be pretty hard to do, even if it was a logical thing to do), paint it black, play it for a while like that and then put the stripes on and shoot the white on it to create the Frankenstein we all know.

Ok... i wasnt going to get into this...that photo is the sunburst. The link Roger posted is still the sunburst. Look above his right hand...you can see the burst. On that same site go to the bottom left of the page a click the vanhalen 76 photos'. Youll see every pic including the gouge is infact the alder sunburst.
Oversized neck pocket? Mmmmm, I can't see it?

I know that the Musikfoto pic above is the sunburst strat...I'm talking about the black strat and how the whole paint timeline doesn't seem to make sense if we are to believe that the sunburst became the black and then the black and white Frankenstein..vanhalen5150 wrote:Ok... i wasnt going to get into this...that photo is the sunburst. The sunburst is alder. Even from the photo's you can tell it is. In the interveiw Ed says he didnt like the wood so he went to Charvel/Ellsworth. He may have painted the strat black later. But I dont believe its the Frank.

Exactly which photo are you guys refering to as the "black strat"? I think it's just the lighting on a few of the pics. It's the sunburst strat in all of them. There is no black strat.

What if....
The Sunburst is actually an alder 60 to 63 Fender.
EVH paints it black.
Then paints it white, masked for the stripes.
Gets a Maple Neck from Charvel which is a wide heeled boogie bodies.
Ads the the neck.
Gives Wayne Charvel credit in interviews for both the body and neck for Charvel's business matters, for Wayne being a cool guy to deal with.

Here is the black strat which, in my book, is the body he got from Charvel and is the Franky. This is a different body than the sunburst guitar.
That's my story and I'm stickin' with it.
