Ed's 2012 Touring Pedalboard

Post by allenc5150 » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:22 am

I hope the thread title isn't misleading; I don't have a picture of it, nor do I have confirmation as to what's on it. But I'd like to throw out some speculation as to what he might be adding to his known rig.

We've seen the new, blue MXR chorus on the warmup gigs, in addition to the EVH wah, phase and flanger and the Boss Super Octave:

Since there is Whammy on at least 2 songs, if he plays those live, there will need to be a Whammy pedal, and, most curious of all, a Vibrato pedal (for the solo) if they play "Bullethead" live.

That's the same pic, just inverted. I was kind of thinking he might expand the board for the full tour, to cover more stuff. Does the OC-3 create Whammy-like effects? I think it might, and that might be what he is using rather than the Digitech unit.

What's up with the flanger settings? Definitely different than the norm.

Also, why did he ditch the MXR stereo chorus he used for Pretty Woman on the last tour to go with the MXR Analog chorus?

There is a "EVH" switch on the pedal that bypassed the knobs and goes to a default "EVH" sound. It seems to me that the switch is engaged (see little orange light on the top-left of the switch).

You will have to ask him.

Thanks Beasty. I have one of these EVH flangers, so I understand about the switch that bypasses the knob. I guess I should have been more specific. Do you think he's using the settings he's got showing for one of the new tunes? I don't remember hearing any abnormal flanger sounds on any of the clips. Maybe he's using the switch all the time now?? Who knows. It is different than the last tour when it looked like his normal settings: 10:30 11:00 11:00 3:30

Well ... it could be set like that for a "Vibe/Leslie" sound ... which appears in the solo of Bullethead (un-tested assumption)?

It is about 1/2 the price.

It is only good news for us ... because I doubt EVH is hunting down bargains on pedals Dunlop gives him for free?

Jokes aside, I am not sure his chorus pedal is very important to him. He used a Peavey Delta pedal, a MXR Stereo Chorus and now this. If he needs a special Phaser, Flanger and Wah-Wah, it seems that any good old chorus does the trick here.

Theres a pic on Huge racks inc of the board in Friedmans shop but some of the pedals in this pic are not in the photo.
For chorus though theres really not much difference i feel in some of alot of them. I love love love my big ass yellow one. Actually alot of cool psycidelic tones and other mild vh flavors to be had that is unlike the eventide years. Ed used a chorus in places on the older records.

The electric intro to Little Guitars comes to mind.

Pretty woman has an MXR chorus on it the whole song, as well as Intruder. But one fine example of its use, and I really like it alot, is Zack Wylde. Its on a ton of stuff he does for solos and its a Jimi Hendrix type of psycho effect but so eerily musical. Like in Intruder.

surprised no one has mentioned the Boss Super Octave. i heard it on the record but i didn't expect it to be a boss pedal!

Ed has had Boss Octaver with him since the early '90s. it is great effect, I can't live without mine.
I am not sure how Ed uses it. I suspect he uses it sporadically like he uses his other FXs (ie the guitar re-entry on the verses of Tattoo).

He used a BOSS OC-2 (live) for the longest time. It seem that he moved-on to a newer model.
There is no guaranty that he used a BOSS pedal on the record. It could be anything: actual double tracking (guitar or bass doubling), an Eventide effect ... or it could be a BOSS pedal!

some boss pedals are better than others... I suppose it has a lot to do with what people wanna achieve.
Ed has always used the boss one. Other people have as well.
