Oh most definitely FW is a masterpiece no doubt!
The reason i singled out this track is the solo is what i thought was the direction ed was heading in?
I really was convinced he was going to go into a really holdsworth influenced lead trip and man that would have been awesome going by the solo in PCTS.

Not the tone
The "vibe" though is about in the same vein if you compare. That same seethy background thing. Its so background seethy then jumpin out front in places. Its like he tried to revisit pcts again with dave. Wonder where the inspiration in ed's mind came from? Do you think it really was holdsworth? Or is it reachin back to other disco club memories? I was young but remeber catchin the tail end of that era. Shows like CHIPS and stuff like that re-run well into this era he created this. Disco pops into my head here with that beat and the slippin around funk parts.

Seriously? Donna Summer meets Johnny Mercer meets fusion, I don't know, that song was like oil and vinegar separating to me. This was one of those moments when Dave wanted one radical direction and Ed wanted another. At that time both those directions were tired and derivative blind alleys. I think the solo for "In the Dead Of Night" was played out by then so why Ed felt the need to ape it was painful to hear. The Edisms in the solo were nice, he should have just left out the Holdsworth. That layered guitar part between the bridge and the "chorus" was nice but the rest is a little aukward. As much as I hated hearing Queen dabbling in disco, at least "another one bites the dust" was cohesive and kind of rocked.

Nah, Push comes to Shove is one of Van Halen's greatest songs. Excellent vocals by Dave. One of Eddie's greatest guitar solos. I didnt like it much when I was younger but now it's one of my favorites. It's a very colorful song with much texture.

I always thought the high-hat beat on Mean Street gave it a disco feel. I hear it a bit on PCTS too...cool tracks either way.

dont pay any attention to strap78 , he does not like much when it comes to eddie van halen.
once you get past 1978 he pretty much disses everything by him.
Easy to do when you are such a ground breaking guitarist yourself and have made all those platinum albums without ever leaving your bedroom.

Awesome tune fo sho. Bridge is fantastic. Thought it was interesting that Dave wanted reggae and Ed came up with this. He said that in some interview. Solo great too.
