THIS TONE

Post by dirtycooter » Fri Jun 26, 2015 4:54 am

Does anyone hear WTF is goin on here??
To me? its probably the next amp bein demoed out and I personally think its fantastic. NO
Fan F'n Tastic!

This is a better rendering of what is to be I believe

This to me is the closest he has come to his old shit while maintaining what I liked about the Hagar hi gain era shifty stuff at the same time.
A killer compromise if you will. Ed I think has done it again finally.

Listen to that sustain and wail and harmonic content.
Its amazing the quality here and its hammeringly awesome in HI DEF

Am I the only one that can hear this is different than the last two tours????

Last but not least
Look how fuckin happy Ed looks playing  Somethin different goin on here fo sure

HE is STILL BADASS! and that to me is a relief

Yes. He is badass! This is just a matter of mix and mic placement. Ed does not, I say not in a room sound like the Tokyo Dome recordings. His live tone is way darker and without the grind that kills the live album. It's a board mix. That's why his amp sounds like crap. The 5150 III sounds way better than that. This vid is closer to how he really sounds. Is there a an annoying buzz I try to ignore in all 5150 amps? Mmmm probably. Go see VH. Then tell me his amps suck. And F YT. I know there's a ton of clips where his amp quacks like a duck and there were issues we don't know about. There's a reason he duct taped his wah so it stayed on in 2007. I blame the Wolfgangs he was working on. But I was there and he sounded great in person! And I'm a harsh critic. We guitar players are. It's in our dna.

After seein the 07/08 fiasco it was crappy tone live. I was there. But I think he is workin out the midrange strange from his tone. I cannot wait to see how much further in this direction he goes.
Its gettin better. After really gettin much closer with an old school type set up and bein more near that sound now than I ever was I still miss the awesome sustain of the 5153. There are things you cannot do on the old tone. Sure its monumental. But in reality I am starting to see its limitations as well and understanding Eds direction alot better today.
I suppose its leading me to some of my own vision of tone.

It sounds good because it's Ed playing, but that thin midrange tone is annoying to me. It has a nasal qulity to it that I just do not dig at all. 'Sorry. 'Not trying to be a douche.

I think the blue channel on the 5153 50 watt can get very close to the old tone with a single Wolf PUP, straight into the amp, some carefully used EQ in the loop and then straight into a single 5153 4 x 12 cab. The main difference is the crunch of the old Marshall power tubes versus the preamp distortion of the new amp. That can't be dialed in. But you can get close ....,..

Nice! Tx for posting. To me it sounds like he worked the MXR 6-band or some other "distortion box" into the amp -- not literally, but sound-wise. Agree that that sounds much closer to the early tone, just more distorted and missing the outright balls, at least on my laptop....

Is the new 'stealth' head already available? Haven't heard or seen any clips yet?

Cooter , you hear it , I heard it on the Billboard awards performance . I think tv venue feeds really suck . That said , we still heard something going on . I saw it on Eds face , and like I said , 'How proud would you be to look over and see your dad jamming like that? He has a mojo going on , survivor maybe . New lease on life , lost it all already , have nothing to loose , its all gravy from here like . Maybe not , but either way he looks happy . I think their is no substitution for emotions and it comes out in your vibe . Ed would make anything sound good . I have seen some firsthand examples of him plugged into pure mass produced junk and it was suddenly amazing. Don't underestimate the heart , soul and fingers of a man that's walked some epic roads and not ponder the shoes he walks in. Oh , no ... did I just create a commercial :what:

You know its like this.
I got the variac and the 12series style nmv head. Attenuator. Etc etc.
I also have the 5153 orig with some wolfs and les paul and super strat etc etc.
Even the full wdw rig with googly fuck fx and the entire front end mxr stuff.

But this? Eats my plexi for breakfast.

Ain't no way no how you will ever get this outta of a plexi.
not this stuff. Will never happen no matter how hard core you think you are.

I think you meant to say that Ed's tone eats plexiglass for lunch, sure sounds like it. :what:

it sounds way better than the cocked wha stuff we were hearing from ed for a while there - but listening in headphones to this clip i still hear the synthetic "overdrive" sound that you get from a cascade - it has something to do with an air-tight opaque low end. it needs to leak a little on the bottom - it's too "steady" - it needs to live between 10 and 3 - instead it sounds like it lives between 11 and 9.99 even when he backs off the guitar vol like in the verse to RWTD - that's tell tale cascade to me.

my problem with this tone is it obscures the finer details of ed's technique.

i'm talkin about the technique that makes this performance exquisite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoMGo__wWm4

 :champ:  :vh:

there has to be some headroom and clarity in the tone in order to allow the finer details of ed's technique to be heard. his newer tones are pressed up against the window so hard that you can't distinguish the image at times. the whole point of VAN HALEN is ed's unique ability to express what no other player can express on the guitar - when that gets obscured by the amp tone, it's frustrating. grrr. :stars: :bang:
