Hey guys, so I tried doing a track with absolutely no production magic on the guitar track save for reverb, and then put my standard mastering track in front of it, and yielded some very interesting results! I feel that the tone without any bells and whistles, like track compression, tape saturation, or EQ, really lets the overall sound of the amp shine through. It makes it very open (I also softened my pick attack and picked as close to the pickup as possible) and clear, I think. In fact, to my ears, whatever I did to my tracks and picking sounds as close to Mark's preferred tone for his Mod 5's as I think I'm ever gonna get without a DSD or an ash strat body. Take a listen and let me know what you think as compared to the tones I usually put out.

I clicked on that to expect the usual (I mean that in a good way), but I was REALLY surprised how close that actually was, it's got most of what I'd want from my set up, if I could get it
I think the verb is spoiling a lot of clips I hear, either too soaked or not natural? but you've got the verb sounding with the guitar rather than a post feel, nice.

Where are your controls set at for this clip? I think I hear the bright cap giving the tone some nice cut. Usually happens around 6 to 6.5 with a 4700pf cap.

Thanks guys! The reverb has a high pass filter on it and light compression to bring out the presence of the 65ms predelay more. As far as the settings go, they are as follows: Presence: 9.5-10 (I believe it's at 10 even though it looks like 9 because the pot, when dimed, is actually rotated in the chassis to be at full when it appears to be at 9), Bass: 2, Mid: 7.9, Treble: 8.1, JMP Master: 8.5, Preamp Gain: 10 (to get that distorted fizz that my custom '78 usually smooths out at lower gain settings), PPIMV: 1.8-2. It does sound pretty much exactly like Mark's Mod 5 clips.

He always said that, besides a touch of verb and delay, he didn't do any post processing on his clips.

amazig tone! how did you setup your action and pickup?

I did the mod5 on my 12000 series and always get muddy sound from my guitar, too much lower mid range and lack of top end. Even with the SM57 dead center on cone. I´m using a isobox, maybe this muddy a little bit.

I´m using a charvel sam dimas with seymor duncan 59 PAF. .9 - 42 gauge.

1000pF on preamp.
500pF on mixer with 470K
220k treble master
250pF tonestack
0.68uF and 820omhs first cathode and 10K second.
.0022 bright channel
.022 normal channel.
every other component stock 12000 metroamp.

Yep.. I think you lucked on to one of the best mod 5's Mark built. No two sound the same. Sure do miss him..

I think you are right about the actual guitar making a difference. Mark's Divebomb inc. Franky strat was a heavy MF'er. I recall he mentioned it was about 7 lbs, body alone So thats a very TIGHT/BRIGHT sounding guitar and Mark initially slapped his trusty '59 pu in it and declared it a "Thin" sound. It took a DSD to make Mark like that guitar, so yeah, IF you had a (heavy) ash strat with a DSD in it (also, a reissue Fender 6 screw trem, which is brighter/ tighter sounding than a Gotoh), you would be as close to Marks Mod5 tone as humanly possible.
I think YOUR style is better represented with the Bray Marshall though
