Much has been made of Ted/Donn's attempts to get Ed's single guitar to sound stereo on VH1. Here's a great video of using a high/low pass filter to generate a stereo sound from a mono guitar. Basically you pan the low frequencies to one side, and the highs to the other side:

Yes I know its a computer, but could this have been done with analog equipment back in 1977? (instead of the hard pan + reverb that they did use) Did analog high/low pass filters exist back then?

5 years later, and I recently remembered this topic when I saw the video I linked below. We know that Ted panned Ed's guitar to one side and put the reverb on the other side to try to make it sorta sound "stereo".

Here's a new video that also demonstrates the high/low pass filter trick, but also bouncing/duping a track and delaying it a bit. He also could have added some inversed polarity of the reverb.

These are things that were available in 1977. It would be interesting if someone could put some some songs from VH1 through Melodyne, and redo Ed's guitar through these stereo tricks.
