20 vs 25 watt celestion greenbacks

Post by Ruben » Wed Nov 16, 2016 11:43 am

I had a couple of 60's 20 watt greenbacks years ago, but remember not liking them that much compared to 003 pre-rola's 25 watt greenbacks.

Does anyone use 20 watt greenbacks with their Marshalls?

They are the bees knees with anything JTM45 IMHO - whether JTM45, JTM45/100 or JTM50. Slightly more scooped than the 25W version, kind of an upper mid/high presence thing and a faster response. The 25W ones are a touch softer sounding, so I tend to prefer those with the later 68-69 style amps. They also seem to prefer cleaner sounding amps where the organic "feel" of amp and speaker interaction is a fundamental part of the tone.
JTM45 RS OT, 1973 18W, JTM45/100, JTM50, JMP50 1986, JMP100 "West Coast", AC15, AC30, BF Super Reverb, Boogie Mk 1, Hiwatt CP103, DR103

This is a GREAT 20 watt greenback tone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taZ74fXaqlY

I wonder; Are the EVH Celestions based on 20 or 25 watt greenbacks? Do they sound the same as the Celestion Heritage 20 watt or the 25 watt Heritage model?

Well I've never heard original Greenbacks in person, but I do have some Heritage Greenbacks and love them. When I was reading up on them before I bought them pretty much everyone said they were too bright compared to the originals. HOWEVER, they were all comparing them to late 60s/70s Greenbacks, which I believe are 25W and I think I'm right in saying they are a bit darker than the 20W? So the Heritage Greenbacks could be based off of the early 60s Greenbacks.
