Seymour Duncan '78 Pickup

Post by paulscape » Thu Jan 02, 2020 7:02 pm

Getting back into this pickup...still good for early VH tones and articulate at clean lower volume. I've ordered a SD Custom too and look forward to trying that out soon. I have a Custom Custom but never tried the Custom.

That sounds great! I love the 78'... :vh:
That guitar is pretty sweet as well-
I'd be interested in hearing your pedal board aside from the amp...
Into something clean-

That would be an interesting experiment as it would show how much gain the EQ’s and chase tone EP3 would actually add.

The '78 is so far one of my favorite pu's........had mine for 7 yrs or so now.....it's been good in every guitar I've put it in. It actually sounded better than the Dsd in my Kne Azusa.
Another pickup that I've been digging is a Dimarzio Super Distortion S (the dual blade single coil sized one)......imo, it is a refined version of the full sized Dsd........it has more clarity, is tighter and has just a touch more upper mids.

After Pete Thorn recently did his ultimate =VH= pickup shootout... And even name dropped Allen-
I was listening closely on headphones and for me it was the Duncan Frankenstein PU :champ:
I have the magazine Ad "Custom" pickup which Pete demo'd, I have the custom custom SH5, and the SH5 Was runner up to my ears as well. I have not tried the Custom in any guitar and I think I'm just going to sell it- I also recently sold my reliced EVH Frankenstein PU, the one Eddie signed...
I have a KP1000, which I heard it's similar to an SD...
I have a DiMarzio virtual Hot that I was considering trying... A couple of pariahs... And a super 70 which I'm most likely going to sell as well.
Sorry- drifting a little... I think my point is:
My top 3
1. Duncan Frankenstein
2. Custom custom
3. '78 evh

I have a Locke 78 running through pedals only into a Duncan power stage into a 212 with vintage 75hz green top and black bottom and get a pretty great sound.
I'll have to see if I can post some sounds!
:vh:

I’m currently building a mid 80’s style Kramer/ESP holy grail guitar and putting in a Frankenstein pickup!
