EVH Wolfgang Pickups too Muddy

I'm not sure if it's just me or...others...but...I just purchased a used 2012 USA Wolfgang Hardtail. The Pickups are very very warm...I don't want to say mudy but very warm to almost muddy. Is this normal? Thinking about swapping them out for a Dimarzio AT-1 (Dimarzio says it's the closest thing to the Music Man Axis P.U.) and a Seymour Duncan 59' neck...I know that these are AII pickups and I think that is one reason they are woofy/muddy. I would love to know if this muddy tone is unusual. I am running through a Michael Landau Fender Hot Rod Deville...Fender cleans.
