Soldering - mechanical connection?

Post by NitroLiq » Tue Feb 21, 2006 5:43 pm

Just curious about how you guys are soldering components to turrets. Are you just soldering each end in the top of the turret hole or are you wrapping it 3/4 around the turret first then into the hole? I've read the pros and cons of both...first way, easier to swap parts but possibly more susceptible to vibration and intermittant connection. 2nd way...military style, the mechanical connection IS the connection but a royal bastard to desolder when swapping out components.

A good mechanical connection around the turret would be:
1.- Tin the wire/Componet lead
2.- Tin the turret
3.- Bend the wire/Component lead around 1/2-3/4 way around the turret
4.- Solder into place

A good connection to the top of the turret would be:
1.- Tin the wire/Componet lead
2.- Tin the turret
3.- Bend the wire/Component lead in a 90 degree bend and insert into the top of the turret (or eyelet)
4.- Solder into place

The best way to do it is to have the insulation stop no more that 1 wire diameter away from the connection point on the turret.

Inserting the componets into the top make for easier removal, just like with eyelets.
