Solder brand and diameter for kit building

Post by mdc1 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 6:07 pm

What diameter 60/40 Kester is in use by most of the experience amp builders? Starting a 100w kit soon and want to make the experience good from a soldering perspective.

I have a very old roll of Alpha "Cen-Tri-Core" Rosin Core, .040 diameter that I've been using for years. Doesn't spatter rosin, melts perfectly. However it's almost empty and I don't know what I'll do when its all gone!
If anyone runs across this Brand and Diameter, let me know! (I find the .031 to be a bit too small except for fine joints)

I use the Radio Shack Silver Bearing .022 dia. and not only works great but the solder joints look like chrome!
May the good Lord take a liking to you!

I like the Kester 63/37 .031" solder.
The No-Clean type. No nasty yellow flux around the joints.

That ratio is eutectic and solidifies much quicker leaving smooth shiny joints.

I just ran out of a roll of Kester I bought about 8 years ago and have gone back to my stash of older Radio Shack 60/40 .032 rosin core. Unless their solder has changed in the last 10-15 years, RatShack's stuff actually works great.

Right on. I use this same solder as well. I like it a lot.
