Hi Mac,

VelvetGeorge should give Steve a Kalashnikov as a present against this PTP-Gurus!

VHT sucks anyway, I would rather not duplicate one his crappy sounding amps. But you have to admit he's got some balls printing that on a circuit board-----I guess he is paranoid?

UUuummmmm, it's just a PC board. Not really the kind of thing that normally polarizes people against one another. Not like religion, not like politics.

IMO, not worth getting this fired up about. I like PTP and PC boards!

Paranoid, maybe... too much rock'n roll, too many successful Boutique-Ampbuilders, too low business regarding his PCB-monsters... but he's got balls, you're absoluteley right. But I'm shure that in person Steve is a smart and cool guy.

And for the record, I make no apologies for PTP boards. Nor does anyone I've ever known. Where does that come from???

First post since the break down maybe this thing is fixed.

I am sure if you asked he would say it is a joke but he wouldn't do it if he wasn't sensitive about the subject.

I will buy a PCB if the amp is worth while. My MKIIC+ is a great PCB amp, my Ganesha was too. But I wouldn't buy VHT for any reason PCB or not.

If I didn't tinker with my amp, I wouldn't mind having either a PCB or PTP board. If anything I'd prefer the PCB, as PTP boards can tend to get a bit more dusty and gunked up when the amp is opened up and are difficult to clean without spraining the component wires. However, the amount I work on my amp there's no way I could use a PCB; firstly I have a bad tendency to melt traces  , and secondly it'd just be too much work moving it in and out all the time.

I have no problem with PCBs but tinkering on the old style boards is probably a bit easier. The circuit design and components are more important than what its mounted to IMO.

Never had to replace/repair a lifted trace on a PtP board. :)
Where are we going and why are we in this basket?????

That addition to that pcb is funny. Smacks of paranoia to me.

Hi guys,

I think that Steve Fryette deep in his heart is a big HIWATT/ Harry Joyce/ Dave Reeves- fan. He seems to have that very special sense for this great black british humor!

All I can say is I've had several Riveras made with Circuit Boards that are great amps and extremely reliable. So in a production environment, I see nothing wrong with using them if it is done right. Rivera uses good quality boards.

However, I have had one VHT in particular used by a guy for 7 years. The PCBs are basically like an Engle or Peavey. It made funny noises on certain notes and it turned out to be the EL84 output tube sockets. They were loose on the board or beyond tensioning. I got it better but nothing I did would solve the problem completely. I told him I suspected he would have to send it back to VHT for a board swap. He took the amp to a VHT authorized service center. No better. He finally contacted VHT and sent it back to the factory with a note detailing what had been done.

VHT said it was a bad output tube and replaced ONE tube. He gets it back and it still does it. So much for reliability and service.
