Build a power scaling plexi with us!

Post by Mickey_C » Fri Jul 20, 2007 9:43 am

We're kicking off our first community build project at PowerScaling.com - a fully Power Scaled version of the 5100 Plexi amp from The Ultimate Tone 3. We will work through all the design considerations online, with Kevin O'Connor, author of TUT3, from London Power.

The 5100 is a fixed bias 50 watt amp, in the style of the original Marshall pliexi amps, that gets the sound of both the 50 or 100 watt models (depending if you use 2 or 4 power tubes). It takes up to four octal power tubes which can be mixed and matched, has individual bias adjustments and test points, as well as some other "special" features. It has improvements across the entire design for tone, reliability, and noise suppression. Power Scaling will make it an even more flexible amp. Completing this project will leave you with a very "gig-worthy" Marshall style amp, with a rock solid Power Scaling implementation.

This amp will have a full 1st generation Power Scaling integration, with variable B+ and a tracking bias control. We will be posting full schematics and layouts soon, and offer specially priced parts kits to the participants, for those who do not wish to completely roll their own chassis, or boards. We will be working through all considerations, including the best ways to scale the amp, changes to the original circuit to compensate for the power supply changes, safety, and maintaining noise suppression.

Right now we have the project posted, and are looking for how many people wish to participate. If you're a DIY or Manufacturer who has not yet Power Scaled an amp, or desire to take your Power Scaling to the next level, please stop by, ring in on the poll for how many wish to participate, and mark the main 5100 Project thread for updates (you must login as a registered user to see this and other technical threads). This is a great way to learn more about integrating Power Scaling into your designs, and get onboard with the next wave of amplifier power-level technology.

We hope to see you there!

Mickey

PS - Please spread the word, if you know of other DIY and Manfucturer frequented forums!
