Most embarrassing music you like

Oh man...I gott jump on this. I personally LOVE Yes. But then if yer not into that whole prog rock thing (old Genesis, Gentile Giant, ELP, Weather Report, Tower of Power, etc) you'd prolly not get it. Chris Squire had the bass tone to die for. Rush is another one. Love that early stuff. I'm a huge Frank Zappa fan...got the entire catalog...and that's a lotta music friends. Hmmm.....how's 'bout Joe Jackson's first 2 albums? Hawkwind, Monster Magnet, Grand Funk Railroad (a lesson in bad guitar tone).
I also dig some chick stuff too, like Veruca Salt, Drain STH, Patti Rothberg, Tracy Bonham. I could go on for days...but I won't

ANother one of my fav bands that you don't hear much of anymore is Emerson Lake and Palmer


of course I'm named after Keith Emerson, but still......I like the fast keyboard!!

Now there's nothing inherently wrong with strange time signatures or changing tempo. But try not to be so pompous and sanctimonious about it. Try listening to Dave Brubeck's Take Five (yeah, I'm one of the 153 Americans) or Pink Floyd's Money. They're cool tunes. There's no self-congratulatory "progressiveness" or "musicianship" going on there.

But, anyway, the stuff I'm embarrassed to admit I like is Bon Jovi and Asia. Sort of the opposite of Yes--cheesy, straight ahead and obvious. But lots of fun to sing along with if you don't mind laughing at yourself.

Oh, yeah, the Beaver Brown band's "Eddie and the Cruisers" song is lots of grist for the self-parody mill. How about Survivor's Eye of the Tiger? The hardest part about all this stuff is keeping the straight, I-really-mean-it face while you're singing/playing it...

Dear Lord, did Gtr_tech just mention Zappa, Gentle Giant and Joe Jackson in the paragraph? Here are four albums that were in this week's pile, er, "rotation" stack next to my record player.

What about Gong and Captain Beyond? If you're into prog ya gotta love these guys. In my opinion, these bands are a little easier to listen to than the usual longwinded prog stuff. I saw Gong play a couple of years ago and they were still sporting the goofy get-ups! Age only honed their musical skills!
