Basic Tools

Post by dmcguitar » Mon Oct 01, 2007 10:11 pm

Hi,
So in researching what is necessary for building an amp I have come to realize that my 25w soldering iron isn't going to be sufficient.

I am looking for advice on some tools to get, which aren't quite expensive, but are decent. I am under the impression that a higher wattage iron is necessary.. but should that be 40, or 80 or what? I figure ill get a little station, so i have somewhere to rest the iron and a sponge to clean it with. I already burnt my arm after wiring the pickups in my guitar (it was unplugged but still quite hot, and I didn't realize i left it where i would be leaning for a second... ouch not doing that again  )

and i was thinking about a helping hands station. I found that trying to hold a wire to a pot, have the pot in a decent position and hold the iron and solder all at the same time provides me with more hassel than baywatch! (Oh, that had to be the worlds worst joke)

so if anyone has advice on what to buy that'd be great, if i left out anything or dont need something let me know please.

lastley when doing all of the soldering to the pots on the amps, do most of you use a pencil tip or the flat head (screwdriver) one?

THanks

I built my JTM 45 with a 25 watt iron, though i struggled with the bus wiring. I got an 80 watt iron from my local Aldi supermarket for
