It's great that you guys like her, but to be dating a Joni Mitchell "FREAK" (as thousandshirts referred to it) would drive me nuts in the same way it would if I was dating a Bach or Coltrane freak, both of whom I think are absolutely BRILLIANT. But I know after a while, I'd have to run off screaming...
Ironically I could listen to that kid all day long, so figure that out...:?

Anyway, sincerely, more power to you if you dig her, I meant no offense.
Fuck it.

Wow! That kid is frickin amazing!

Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez don't cut for me just because all the nuns at my old school thought they could sing like them. If that's not a turnoff, I don't know what is.

She had been threatning to quit recording & performing for a while and had for almost a decade, publicly claiming that she is ashamed to be a part of the music biz calling it a "cesspool." Man I sympathize.

For those unfamilier with her Mitchell fans are in two camps generally. Camp 1: fans of the early albums Joni Mitchell , Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, For the Roses.

Camp two: Court and Spark, Hissing of the Summer Lawns ,Heirja, Don Wons Reckless Daughter, Mingus etc.
Court and Spark 1973 is the gateway album into her Jazz exploration and the album containing the hit "Help Me", followed by Hissing of the Summer Lawns where she really alienated much of her audience with even more complex arrangements. Instead of pandering Joni continued to explore and was very forward thinking from 75 on.

Things to seek out..."Edith and Kingpin" "Harry's house" Sweet Bird of Youth from "Hissing of the Summer Lawns" 1975, "Otis and Marlena" from Don Reckless Daughter 1977, "Cold Blue Steel" from For the Roses...

As a guitarist she is able to conjure up tremendous atmosphere and imagery on top of being a very unique player. She has few equals IMO. Her lyrical ability and word play chops (from 72-79) are master strokes of the highest order.

Her arrangement sense is sublime in the mid to later period. Lyrcially she has very thoughful and sobering lyrics regarding social conventions, success, aging etc. Her creative work with Jaco is stunning. Certainly one of the most complete, foward thinking, candid, unpandering, non-politically correct artist I can think of period. A dying breed...Hat's off to Her!!

Cheers,

Eric

I remember hearing a Joni Mitchell tune on the radio that really caught my attention when I was driving solo during my move from FL to NY. Took me forever to finally find out what it was later but eventually did
