Found an Ipod ???
I found an iPod on my tree lawn a couple days ago. Before I sell it on ebay for some quick cash I would like to try to find the rightfull owner if possible. Is there a way to do this with the serial number??

Theres no way you can get someones personal info through apple or their site from the SN. Thats just prudence- they have no idea who you are or if you want that info to go stalk and kill the person and theyd just as soon not want to get involved. I think if you really wanted to find them you could probably look through the thing and find a contact of some sort. If you really wanted to you could post around about it and say 'if its not your dont bother contacting me because I want a detailed list of things Id find in that ipod.'

Obviously I didn't expect to get someones personal info, I was wondering if there was a service setup for this purpose.Billy Batz wrote:Theres no way you can get someones personal info through apple or their site from the SN. Kinda like those keychains that say "If found drop in a mailbox and it will be returned to the owner."
No contacts in it.

The name on the ipod was a nickname.rockstah wrote:u can contact apple. check the info on the ipod they may have put their full name.
Looked over at the apple forums, and the general concensus is that Apple doesn't want anything to do with returning lost or stolen ipods.
The library is right down the street from me. I'll put up a flyer, and let them know I'll want detailed info on what is in the ipod, and sit on it for a week or so.

Call the local police, tell them what you found, give the serial number and nickname OVER THE PHONE. They'll tell you after X amount of time that if nobody calls to claim it, it's yours.
Just call them. Don't go to the Police Station. If you do, then they'll want to hold it for that period. Then you'll have to go through the hassel of calling to check, and going down there to pick it up if nobody claims it.
I did this with a Fluke Multimeter I found. I called to tell them, nobody ever claimed it, and my conscience was clear.

Guys Ive been through this before. You cant do anything with the serial. Apple wants nothing to do with lost or stolen ipods even though it is easily within their power to. Its kind of a controversy with the high percentage of stolen ipods that log onto apples site and itunes. Mightymike has the idea.

So easy. Just put up signs up on telephone poles around the neighborhood (and also in the Library) stating you found an Ipod, but give as little info as possible about it, and have any potential owner describe it exactly... color, markings, anything that is very specific to that Ipod. State on the postings that if the rightful owner does not respond with an EXACT description within a specified time period (2 weeks, 3 weeks, whatever), the Ipod will be "donated", and then do what you want with it. The other thing is to note where you put up your postings, and take them down after the predetermined time is expired, assuming either nobody called, or if you get bogus callers that cant describe it exactly. This is so you dont have somebody call you 2 months from now saying its theirs, cause they saw a posting that you didnt take down.
Somebody did that with a watch that I lost, and he got a few bogey callers, until I saw the posting, described the watch that I lost, and I got my watch back.
