Removing lacquer from guitar neck?

Post by dirtydeeds22 » Mon May 09, 2005 12:18 pm

I'm thinking of removing the lacquer from the neck of my Les Paul, but want to find the best method. Has anybody done this on a Les Paul? What method? Sanding or stripper?

ah sanda neck Jeff-san. Stripper can melt any binding if you don't pay attention which is easy to do. Just start with about 180 grit and be careful til your get to wood then immediately jump up to 220, once the 220 gets out all of the scratches that the 180 made jump up to the next highest grit paper. Keep doing that until you are pretty much in the 600 grit area. Use linseed oil so it seals the wood once you finish, otherwise your hand oils and sweat will ruin the wood.

Anytime bro. Just so that you are clear on this you only want to remove the finish. It is real easy to start grinding into the wood. This is why I said to start with such a high grit sandpaper. It will take some time, just be patient. You are going through about a minimun of 7 layers of paint. 2-primer coats, 2- color coats, 3- clear coats. Plus you will have to get past the grain filler which is another coat or two. Once you get to the primer coat start taking it easy and move around to get the other areas to primer layer.

Use a palm sander and do long sweeps the length of the neck not staying in one place too long.

GO make some sawdust.
