Is this an obsession?

Post by killpop99 » Thu May 01, 2008 12:13 am

The other day I realized that I spend more time worrying about guitar tone than I do playing the guitar; which is the whole point anyway. I started learning "Far Beyond the Sun", and it was a lot of fun. I forgot how fun it was to practice. Does anyone else feel this way? (btw I only learned like the first minute of the song and that took like 3 hours to get those damn runs down, Yngwie rules)
If I ever think I want to get married, I'll find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.

Comes with the territory.
Tone definitely has an inspirational effect.
Besides, it makes practicing easier.
Try playing those runs clean...now you got a challenge !

If you lose yourself in the search for tone, then you really aren't going to get any better at guitar. I wrote an article about this once about too many people get consumed with this and forget about the joy of playing and excelling in skill. Seriously though, if you can't sound good through a good Marshall and a Les Paul... there's problems with YOU!

That describes me EXACTLY. For the last 10 years I've played very rarely.. And whenever I do, I wind up my burying my head in an amp. I find chasing tone more rewarding than actually playing.....Nothing like the feeling of when you've tweaked something to "near" perfection...

Still enjoy the fruits of my labor, mind you. I'm just far more fascinated with tone than the actual music. Fine with me!!!

ALLLLLOOOOOOOOOTTTTT of the tone is in the hands...

I brought one of my amps (36w version of a 1974X TMB) for a local star to try out.

Man... that amp sounded evil and it blew me away how he made it sound so good!! He liked it so bad he brought it on tour... But that is beside the point... he made the amp sound better just by the way he played it...

So you can slap mustards and CC resistors.... but if you can't play well... the amp will amplify how bad you suck... Actually, the better the amp,, the MORE it will amplify how bad you suck...

Your not kidding about that Chubs....

You can suck tone out of almost anything if you work at it. I heard a guy make a Peavey Renown sound like a gift from gods... When he finally played through his own rig, jaws were dropping. The best sounding hands I've ever heard in person....

Good luck making a POS sound woody or sparkle, though...

I'm just fascinated by the subtles that complement your own tone...
