Light machine oil for the motor, bearings. Many designs have a small ball bearing at the bottom of the platter's spindle. Sometimes dust and gunk get in the shaft and on the bearing, requiring a good cleaning.

Good luck.

Much appreciated,

I've heard that records sound better. Is this true?

I think that it's a matter of personal preference, vinyl sounds natural and more "present" to me, whereas CD's are colder and cleaner.

The best example of this to me was "Johnny Winter" which I have on CD and on Vinyl. There is more separation and definition on CD, but everything on that vinyl sounds bigger, warmer, and fatter. I try to track down all my favourites on Vinyl, because I never find my ears fatigued when listening to a vinyl record, whereas CD's, have something annoying going on. Just my opinion/experience.

I'd put it this way, I'd never even toy with the idea of dropping $400 on a CD player, but I've been seriously considering it for a Turntable.

with a good hifi amplifier vinyl turntable rules over a cd player ..always ...provided your records are good .....it's a matter of sound compression i think...like the difference between wave and mp3...in a vinyl every frequency range is recorded ...records on cds are too much cleaned to fit 700mo ...that's pretty why sony created sacd format .....

+1 on the Rega's. My everyday turntable is a P3 and it sounds great with a cheap Goldring 1042 MM cartridge. However, my vintage Garrard 301 knocks spots off it in it's granite plinth. I'd hate to try and put a value on all the bits I'd spent on it over the years though.
Nobody mentioned Garrard for vintage turntables though? Unbelieveable. But only 301's and 401's, and make sure they're in good order.
Some of the seventies japanese super decks are great as well though, but I'm not a great fan of direct drive decks, despite their rock solid bass. Look for some of the top Denon's, Teac's, Pioneer's, and the ultimate Trio motor units (deck only, no arm board).
I suspect this might be going way beyond acceptable budget's though.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

I'll check into all these brands for sure. At this point, there is no budget limit because I have no money.

Summer is when I will make my money, and after tuition fees, whats left is gonna be divied between:

1) Refret on my Les Paul Custom. The originals were low to begin with, and now have 26 years of wear on them.

2) Some kind of nice Turntable. Depends on how much is left in my account.

3) I just put $200 into my vintage Supro, but according to the tech, the PT is virtually shot and will need a rewind soon, and one of the speakers is in pretty rough shape (couple of cracks in the cone). I might pump a little more into this one to make it more useable.

4) I'd really like a 4x12 with Scummies in it. 25 watters. Stoneage, with with cane grill.

I definately won't be able to afford all of them, but in the time it takes me to make the money, I can decide what I want most.
