Why is it that the worse the quaility of music the better the gigs?? We played some bitchin' gigs with Fats. I hated the songs. But we actually got to play a song with Ian Hunter, the Ramones, Ace Frehely, some ex NY Dolls and Debbie Harry (not together of course!). And, none of them ever asked me to join their band after complimenting my playing!!! Then got in a talented band pulling off Purple, Zep, Who and Queen covers and no one cared. Go figger...


BTW, I agree. There really is mojo in the Rory Strat. Just the fact that he was so done to earth, lived and breathed his music and single handedly turned a new Strat into what became his legacy reeks of true dedication. The sig guitars? Just copies with an autograph. But this one...yeah man it's NICE. Saw him and met him several times. A more honest to goodness music lover you find hard to meet. RIP.

So true on both counts: I got to play in some great, and strange places with that band. And the music stunk. Still, I got to play all the clichés you could never get away with in a serious band. I was the token heavy rock, noisemaker in a few songs. Music is strange..

Rory Gallagher was a great player. I have a DVD of a fantastic live show recorded in a big hall Germany in 1977, the Rockpalast show. Amazing energy, very personal player.

The RG strat feels so right to me, it´s not just a strat with the paint peeled off, it feels played in right out of the case. Wonder what it will feel like in a few years. I never really liked the signature guitar thing, but this thing feels right, as if it was played by somebody.

Exactly. The Custom Shop really nailed this one. Like you say...a well worn in right out of the box 30 year old Strat. Most of the signature guitars don't work becasue they're pretty much bullshit. The only ones that work are real dupes of a guy's real main ax like the Rory or SRV #1. Those are personal fav's re-created the best they can. I can only imagine what #1 plays like if they got the Rory so on. The Beck, Clapton, Yngwie, Buddy Guy, yadda, yaddda, yadddda Strats are just production line models with a decal (and cost adder). I played a friends Clapton Strat. I'm sure it plays just like "Blackie".

I've got lots of Rory stuff. Always loved his intensity. His stuff with Taste was not really that good. That he grew to be such an accomplished player givers me hope!! And man, could he play slide!

I just got several new DVD's. One is just before he died. He plays great but looks terrible. All swelled up. Made me sad to see it. Saw him on a Midnight Special once. He was smoking when all of a sudden his amp burst into flames! The audience was shouting and pointing for him to turn and look but he thought they were just digging the show. Roadies finally came out with fire extinghusers. He was pissed. Classic.

I was skeptical about the Clapton Strat too until I ended up with one in a trade deal. I was going to sell it but the more I played it the more I liked it. The thing that seperates the Clapton from some of the other signature guitars is that they are either too speciallized to the artist (Beck), a one trick poney (SRV) or nothing special.

The Clapton Strat is actually a nice update of the Strat features that allow it to have a good range of sounds. Look at all the players using them (Townsend, Phil Palmer, etc.) and you see a guitar that fits easily in a bunch of different styles. The Mid boost can be especially useful (if not overused). The workmanship is better than the normal production guitars as well. It would be a great guitar even without the signature.
