updating my Mom's Compaq ???

Post by VelvetGeorge » Wed Oct 25, 2006 4:04 pm

My Mom has a Compaq computer with Windows ME that just sucks. She has all kinds of trouble with it. I tried to update to XP Pro (with a legit disk) and it says the serial number is incorrect. Does Compaq require that you get upgrades directly from them or something???

What's the work around for this? Aside from wiping the drive and installing from scratch?

Thanks,

george

1. check to make sure u have the right serial number? and can u even upgrade from me to xp?
2. my advice, if u werent trying to avoid it in the first place, is clean install xp pro - u will have less problems this way.

Do I need to use the serial from her comp?

I agree with you. I may just wait until the semester ends (she's in college right now) and install XP from scratch.

ME is stupid crappy. She can barely finish her classwork on this heap.

my mom had that same rig. she never had any probs for the longest time (years) clean install for sure. there's nothing like a clean format. serial should work.

Yeah, I'd delete the partitions, reset them, and XP will prompt you to then reformat, then it'll install. It should work out fine as long as the numbers that are with the XP are right.
