He's going to turn into the piano playing kid from the movie Shine.
His brain should be splitting in two... anytime now...

His face is a riot...I would never post a clip making those expressions...

But I have to tell ya..the hammer on's were perfect...

What is that stuff under the fret board...

I've heard of players using rubber bands at the nut to dampen the other strings from ringing...in fact I have a Satriani instructional video that says to do that.

I don't think that is necessary with good technique myself...but I could always be wrong. 8)

Star Guitar, I think on one neck it was a piece of paper, and the other looked like a dollar bill or something like that.

technigue or not when only using one hand its need to mute the strings so notes dont sound behind the fretted note. this is part of the technigue when using two hands on one neck. keeping the notes behind the fretted notes from ringing.
same thing when playing with a slide even - keeping the notes behind ( closest to the nut) from rining.

firts time i saw this kind of mute ( adapter ) jennifer batten had one that would clip in place to keep the notes behind the actual note from ringing out.

The hair tie is a popular studio trick from what I've read. I've also heard of players removing unused strings on their guitars when doing tapping sequences in the studio.

That was some very evoved(technique-wise)playing. That guitar he's playing is a one trick pony though. I used to get high and mess around with stuff like that, though what I was doing was a bit more along the lines of what EVH was doing(check out his solo from I think the Montreal show in '84 on Youtube). What this "Faceman" was doing, is simply playing two parts at once. What Ed was doing, was creating a new "sound". It's all good though.

Way back when when I first started playing I played jazz and alot of jazz players would use those. It replaces the truss rod cover and mutes the open strings. Most jazz players hate open strings.

Mike

Yeah, the older Basses like the Hagstroms or jazz box's like D'Angelico's had those felt mutes either right after the bridge before the pickup, or...
an arm apparatus right after the nut... One would adjust it by a finger screw that applied the desired pressure...
I can only think of the Sitar Gitar that is currently in production that has a felted mute.

Didn't Ron Eschte's 7 string Jazz box have a felt mute.? I think yes...
