Yep, I got the standard set. The set that is supposed to be modeled on a real PAF that he got a hold of. I think the thing that really got me sold to even try the WCR is Jims philosophy on pickups. He told me I don't make a PAF clone. I make a clone of a new PAFs tone. Jim clearly stated to me he is not trying to physically clone a PAF but that he cloned the tone of what the perfect PAF sounded like. I had a set of Timbuckers to but sold them to. Man they went fast. I even had a set of Tom Holmes PUPS once. Sold, and also very fast. I finally rested with the WCR Crossroads. I may try a set of Darkbursts next but I don't know.

Well, now you know Wags (Jim Wagner's) and my philosophy. You can't make "one" of anything vintage. There were too many variations of the PAF tone, underwound, overwound, in the middle...sheesh...that's why he cloned the tone, and not the PAF itself. And for good reason, most PAF's are hit and miss, if you get a good set, awesome, however you have to buy a few to get there. I have three, they're great...but I've bought quite a few more than 3 to get those three.

Just like Wags listened to several PAF's before he got one that he started with as a standard (from a 61 SG Standard, IIRC), then did variations on the theme, hence why he has four PAF variants (Crossroads, Darkbursts, Goodwoods & Fillmores, plus combinations like the Moore/Green Set and the BetSet, my personal go to set right now, although I have DB's, GW's and Crossroad sets, too).

I did the same thing with Celestion Pre Rola speakers, only I had to buy about 300 of them to find the eight I cloned.
Expensive? Yeah, try 40k in speakers over five years.
Lots of R&D? Yeah.
Alot of failures? Yeah.
Worth the trouble? Only if you want the tone you hear in your head, or from someone else's gear who has that tone you want.
Cheaper than the real thing? Absolutely.

With average PAF sets starting at $3000 each & up, hitting 10K for double whites, I think the Voodoos, WCR's, and whoever else are a fabulous deal. Buy Wag's pickups and save the other $2700 on a good guitar to put them in.

Same deal with Pre Rola Celestions, too. They're going for $350 - 500 each now for original no issues speakers in good shape. Get a Scumback with the same tone for $150...pretty much a no-brainer...

I know you'll enjoy the WCR pickups. I still have my Voodoos in a guitar, but only because they were wound the way I like them, which is pretty much a Crossroads neck/Darkburst bridge combination, if you're interested.

I definitely like the WCR pickups, but to say that I'm extremely happy with my new timbuckers is an understatement. His new wind is absoultely perfect to my taste, warm and fat with big sweet mids, reminds me of the best p90ish PAF sounds I've heard.
