And now, I've received two bits of news. Make of it what you will, but it strikes me that our pets touch other people's and their pet's lives, too, not just our own.

I already mentioned the three neighborhood dogs coming to say goodbye to Bear on Sunday-Monday-Tuesday.

In 1997 I lived with a woman who had a dog for about 5 months, she had been a client for my computer business. Dino was a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and tall. Almost twice Bear's height, with very long legs. Watching them play and run was funny, Dino taking one long stride to Bear's three. But they were great friends. Frequently Bear would leave my bed and go sleep with Dino & Caroline.

Caroline sold her house in Hollywood & moved back to Australia in late 97. We kept in touch sporadically over the years.

When I sent out the RIP Bear Seavall email to all of Bear's friends that knew him, she emailed me back.

This is what she had to say in her reply email:

Subject: Dino Balog, 1991-2008

"This is unbelievable!!!

Very Sad news. I had Dino put down this morning (9 am appointment). His back leg just wasn't working anymore.

He went peacefully with me hugging him the entire time. Eric and I buried him on his lovely property and we are to plant a beautiful weeping birch where he lays protecting the house."

I had Bear put down at 9 am yesterday morning. So 8000 miles and several time zones apart, my buddy and his good buddy, both left this world for Doggie Heaven.

The other odd bit of news. Bear had one other great friend, a lab named Jake. His owners, Denise & Panos, sold their property here three years ago and moved to Arizona. Jake & Bear were inseparable during the time they lived here, up till 2005, one or the other staying at each other's place during the day, if necessary. Always going to the beach together, taking walks, chasing cats, well you get the idea.

Yesterday morning at 4 am is when Bear gave me "the look", and I knew it was time to put him down. At 5 am, Arizone time (1 hour earlier) Denise woke up for no reason and thought of Bear. A few minutes later, Panos called her to let her know I had sent him the email about Bear's health status (this was right after I decided he needed to be put to sleep). Panos was out of town and his laptop hadn't had internet service for days. Then I sent him the email about Bear, and that's when his internet connection came back, exactly one minute after 4 am, and then he called Denise to tell her about Bear.

It almost sounds mystical and spiritual, but I guess my buddy's winning, loving personality and life force sent out a signal to everyone who's life he touched.

Shelly & I will be leaving around 1 pm today to get out of town for the weekend. We just need to get away for a couple of days.

I'll be answering the phone, and shipping out orders this morning, so if I've put anyone off, feel free to call anytime after 8 am PST, I'll be here until around 12 noon PST.

Thanks for reading this about my wonderful dog Bear. He was the greatest.

It is really funny how stuff like this will stick with you forever. You really have to go out now and take some time away ASAP. There is nothing better that you could do. . . The strange and special letter from Australia is good or terrible, both, I don't know how to quite take that. Some time away really is best, though. You'll appreciate that a year from now. Some things never go away. . .

You're a good man, Jim!

We had a miniature dachsund named Lenny (a girl, named after the SRV song and guitar) who we had had for ten years. In July of 2005, she disappeared from our yard which was fenced in. It was not like her to run off, and we were beside ourselves. We put up flyers and someone recognized her. To make a long story short, someone had stolen her and was trying to sell her. After a couple days, he had finally given up and just gave her to a lady, who then saw the flyer and returned her to us. We were so thankful, especially considering that we were getting ready at the time to move from Arizona to Virginia. Well, we made the move with Lenny and things were well, but one night that November our little girl had went outside and left the front door ajar. Lenny got out and was hit by a car. We immediately rushed her to an emergency vet clinic, but she was almost gone by the time we got there. She had sustained fatal injuries. Needless to say, we had her put to sleep so she didn't linger on in agony any longer.
It was a very hard time, thinking we had lost her once and then losing her again in just a few months and in such a devastating way. In a way though, it was a little easier the second time just in the fact that we knew what had happened, we didn't have to wory that she was lost and starving or being mistreated. That gave us some solace, but it was still a difficult period. My thoughts are with you, I know how hard it is.
What good is my wisdom
When there are no words to say
How I feel everday ?

My condolences, Jim. I'm a 35 year old 190lbs man sitting in the middle of an open concept office... and you have me on the verge of tears...

Sorry to hear it. That is the only down side of having a dog... they act so human... we love them to death... but there life expentency is only 15 years... so unless your 85... odds are you will outlive them and it will break your heart...

I have a 3 month old baby and a 5 year old Boston Terrier... I can just imagine what this will do when the dog passes away in 10years...

Thanks again everyone, for all of your thoughts, stories and experiences.

The cat (Boots) and I are really feeling Bear's loss this morning. She's gone around to all of his favorite spots he used to lay, sniffing the carpet. She's meowing loudly at each one, or rubbing her face on the spots he left behind.

Following her around with Nature's Miracle carpet cleaner to remove the spots he left behind is making me shed a few tears, too.

Happy to answer any questions via email, but if you call, be prepared for a very small voice answering the phone. It'll be me, but I just won't sound like me for a few days, I'd guess.

Once again, thanks to everyone for their understanding and kindness.

I read a book in college (in a Philosophy class) and it was called Les Souvenirs (The memories)...

It talked about how a happy memory will become a sad one after a life event.... Like all the good memories you have of Bear were good ones, the time he was still here... But quickly turned to sad ones the minutes after he went back home.

The important part to remember is that you both made eachothers life better. He was your good little buddy and you were his favorite guy in the whole wide world. You gave him a good life and you can be sure he thanks you for it. He gave you a better life... and that is what you need to focus on. He thought you compassion and in the end, misericorde. unselfishness and love of another beeing.

Keep those memories, close to your heart.

Sometimes I feel like an idiot cause I feel like I care more about animals than people. Sorry to hear about your dog. I have a chihuhua mix named Bear. People get to make their own stupid decisions. Pets are subject ot our kindness or cruelty. I had a terrier mix for 13 plus years that I had to do the same to but it was time and the right thing to do. We should be so lucky. I wish I had the right to painlessly put myself to sleep when the itme comes. Cheer up Charlie Brown. You rock!
