Mercury makes a set for the DSL amps, has anyone ever tried those? Now that they are being phased out now may be a good time to pick one up. I noticed GC has them at a reduced price.....Tone Slinger wrote:I agree, the DSL's do sound pretty good, they cover both a good clean and dirty tone. But to nit-pick, they at least need a better ot, as compared to a test I did, an old 70's JMP master volume had a more natural feel and break up. I mainly attributed this to it having better transformers. I'd like to hear a DSL with better transformer's.

I have a DR that I bought (in the late 80's maybe). I was thinking of selling it, but I re-tubed it with a set of JJ EL34s. That really made it come around to my liking. I have been running it through a Hotplate with the preamp gain turned down more than I had been with the 6L6GCs (or whatever they were). It is running through an early eighties Marshall cab. I'm pretty happy with it.
Mind you I am building a 100w Metro kit. It's all but done, and waiting for some parts. I intend to use it as my main amp, but the Mesa is good for some things. I am loath to get rid of it.
It's like I always say to my wife (and to myself) to justify a new guitar, amp, pedal, etc: It's another color I need in my palette.

You have to use what works for whatever music endeavor you are involved in at the moment. Right now I play modern black/death metal and a Marshall 2203 is not that tone.
Flame on cause I know its coming......
Get back your Marshall and start playing oldschool Black Metal like Bathory, early Sodom and Kreator.

See ?? It's not the amps fault , you simply need to adjust your playing style

For Doom Metal or early Bathory type sounds my JMP 2204 is perfect!

Quorthon - I brought with me my Ibanez Destroyer and a tiny Yamaha 20W amplifier, both of which I still have by the way. And - believe it or not - no effect boxes or pedals whatsoever. I believe we used a Aria pro II bass, but wouldnStonersteve wrote:that first two Bathory's sound like my JMP 2204 with a pedal for boost.

Key to Darkthrone tone for post Soulside Journey through today.
Marshall Super Lead JMP era. Using a Boss HM-2 between the guitar and amp.
For the early "Black Metal" Darkthrone put your amp in the bath tub or walk in shower. Use a boom mike to distance mike the amp from above. Just point the mike downwards towards the amp.
Starting with Total Death Nocturno started close miking his amp again along with the above mentioned distance miking and blending the signal so you get the clarity of the close miking but the spatial dissonance of the distant miking.

I never got a good sound from my Boss HM-2. That thing sounds so crappy .Necrovore wrote:Key to Darkthrone tone for post Soulside Journey through today.

Ah cool. Good guy from Australia does that site. My new project I think is better. Still not to knock what I was part of so many years ago.
