i've been listening to rev horton heat for a number of years, and recently picked up some stray cats discs and one by setzer's orchestra. i was a stray cats fan at the time, but i was a kid and all i had was stuff taped off the radio as pocketmoney rarely stretched as far as buying records.

i recently bought a danelectro fab echo and it instantly gave me the rockabilly sound (neither my sound city 50+ nor ross practise amp have reverbbbbb). i'm going to have to brush up on country-like scales and runs, as my blues and rock n' roll likes just don't fill out a rockabilly picture.

I know how to play Stray Cat's Strut all the way exact, and a lot of old 50s tunes like Mac the Knife,even some old Chet. Had to learn them along with 60, 70s and funk, 80s stuff, and even some country. Each place we played had a different crown and we had to play to them.

Heck I even had to learn the elvis 2001 show one time for an Impersonator.

The cool thing I found learning all these styles was that it opened my mind to new things other than just Hard Rock and Metal. I feel learning all these different styles improved my playing, and I can enjoy playing just about anything if the crowd is getting into it.

Chief,Brian Setzer is an amazing player and has always known tone he is a Massapequea boy from LI,down the street from where my aunt still lives!

Anyone know what speakers he uses? I'm thinking oxfords or jensens. the reason I'm asking is this guy was trying to convince me he used vintage 30's and I thought that was absurd! Phil

Why? Vintage 30 is a GREAT sounding speaker in a Fender. I wouldn't be surprised if he used them live. In the studio, I'm sure he has some other more original weapons of choice. Oxfords from that era really aren't that great. I have a '63 Bandmaster cab, '63 Vibroverb and also a '62 Twin that all came with period Oxfords. Let me tell you, they definitely aren't on my "favorites" list.

I think Jensens from that era sound better in open back vs. closed back cabs.

P.S. Oh yeah, back to the original topic, HE KICKS ASS!!!!! One of my favorite guitar players of all time.

I agree, I just installed a pair of vintage 30's in a friends 1936 cab and they sounded great with his black bassman. I don't like old oxfords, but a tight freshly reconed oxford sounds pretty nice in a 2 12 bassman cab. Phil

Yep. I actually jammed with him at a party in 'pequa once. He was there by himself just jamming away. Playing all kinds of stuff, too. Hendrix, Zep, VH, Purple. All the rock shit of the day. He was great even then (pre Cats days).

He's a great all around player.
