+1, Dave

I love the way he played drums. Saw him on the first Rainbow tour. He did the 1812th Overture solo. "Blew me fuckin 'ead off"

I saw Rainbow...but it was (I think) their 2nd tour...w/Joe Lynn Turner.

I freakin LOVE Rainbow.

I liked their video's.

I don't know if Cozy was with them on the tour I saw...

I was too engrossed in the Guitar Playing.

But, I've read about him, have his solo album, and saw some MTV Video's with him ...Awesome. I especially liked "All Night Long".

Anyone know what he died from?

I know he had Ferrari's, Ducati's, all sorts of speed freak rides.

From what I got off of wiki about Cozy's death "Cozy Powell died on April 5, 1998 following a car crash, driving his Saab 9000 in bad weather on the M4 motorway near Bristol, while talking to his girlfriend on his mobile phone. He was living at Lambourn in Berkshire at the time and had returned to the studio shortly before his death to record with Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green. By that time, he had been the drummer on at least 66 albums with minor contributions on many other recordings. It was generally felt that Powell's death was a great loss to the world of popular music. Countless rock-based drummers have cited Cozy Powell as an influence." I didn't know about him going to record with Peter Green. Chad

Peter Green spent most of his adult life recovering from Mental illness...which he attributed to a bad trip on LSD.I think maybe he had a chemical imbalance that was exacerbated by drug use.

Late 90's saw him getting back to playing guitar....after decades of treatment.

I like the old Fleetwood Mac very much...Blues Based, Rock and Roll. Look for "The Original Fleetwood Mac" on half.com or amazon.com. "Shrine '69" stands out for me, a live performance. "Peter Green's Original Fleetwood Mac is also great.

I remember an interview with Blackmore when asked about Cozy's "need for speed". He said "Yeah, Cozy and I like to go out on the autobahn in Cozy's Ferrari. He drives like a maniac and I watch out for cops."

speaking of blackmore, i was reading somewhere about a deep purple version x re-grouping, but they said "someone" was being difficult & had a history of such behaviour. it may have been an interview with glenn hughes (another of my all time favs)

That would be great,Lord Coverdale, the ever amazing Glenn Hughes,Ian Paice and problem child,Ritchie Blackmore.
But I thought that Ritchie was so heavily into the knight, that he cannot come out into the daylight anymore!
To hear him playing Purple with the boys again would be killer,I'd buy a ticket!
I have heard Glenn play Burn with the Chili Pepers Chad on drums, absolutely killer, the voice and chops are still there,so be it!
About Cozy,so sad for him to die and then so horribly, crushed between the car and the highway as the car flipped, the weather and the phone being the precipatating factors.
I well remember bombing up and down the M1 motorway myself at 100 to 115mph cruising, the speed limit was 70mph,and doing insane speeds in the heavy thick fog up north, where visibility was only maybe 30 yards and speeding up,not slowing down!
I am a lucky boy to be here,it helps to be good, but it is even better to be lucky. The senselessness of a stupid thing happening at the wrong time, leading to a great tragedy over nothing really,is incredible,so for the most part,my brain is under my right foot these days.
Love to see a real Deep Purple again though, now that Ritchie is somewhat reformed.

Emphasis on REAL. I'm not a fan of Morse playing Purple. Just not his style. I'm with you Dave, I'm up $$$ for a Mark ll reunion (again!)

Deep Purple Re-group

Post by guitronics » Thu Jun 07, 2007 7:57 am

I've seen the Purp 3 times...once in 71? or 72 in which Ritchie didn't show up.I then saw them in about '90....With Ritchie;lastly I saw them with Steve Morse.

I take exception at the remark about Morse not being up to style....I saw him at DTE (previously called Pine Knob)...around Clarkston, MI.

I love Richie's playing, and stage antics.

I was blown away at Steve Morse's playing....awestruck.

This was maybe 5 or so years ago...

The End - all, be - all would be for all Deep Purple's Musicians,singer's,etc...and All of Rainbow's - together

They could take turns creating original lineups with songs from those periods.

Morse is a great guitar player. He just can't play the bluesy side like Blackmore did ( Lazy, Maybe I'm A Leo, Space Truckin, Never Before, Place in Line)

Well, Ritchie Picked his own replacement.

I read an interview back in the early 90's where DP was on their reunion tour....Richie backed out before the Japanese leg of the tour.

He said something to the effect:I can't do this anymore.
The band replied:Who can we get to replace you?

Ritchie said: Steve Morse...he knows all my stuff, or Gary Moore.Check them out.
