Man, what a great night last night in the city with some Metro (and other) friends!! Finally met NY Chief and NitroLiq (very cool dudes), and Chiefs friend Chris and his son Nick, equally cool. I guess its all the back and forth on the forum, but I felt like I've known y'all for years.
So here's the run down:
Met up with Chief at Rudy's Music Stop on 48th St, and we checked out some slick guitars there (we'll hook you up with SOME sort of Nat soon enough, Chief!!). Then we prowled a few other stores there, including Manny's, where we saw Jimi Hendrix's autographed pic, and some actual signed reciepts of Jimi's purchases. Chief noticed something that I dont think ANYONE ON GODS GREEN EARTH has ever noticed, which is that (in his opinion) Waylon Jennings can be mistaken for Jimi Hendrix (

). This was news to me, and somehow, it still IS news to me, but apparently, Chief is a visionary. (We'll also hook you up with some new glasses, bro). So then we met up with Nitro, another great guy, and we all headed over to the Irridium. Chiefs buddy (Chris) and his son Nick showed up, and I gotta say before I go further, ALL these guys were just the best. Rarely do you meet people that you click with immediately, but these guys were like good ol' friends right from the get-go.
Anyway, a little bullshitting, a little dinner, a few cold ones, and then the living legend (NOT the Chief with his Jennings/Hendrix association... cause THAT observation has earned you legendary status, my friend) Les Paul came out with his trio (actually a quad-o) and did his thing. WHAT a performer. I mean forget about him being 92 or 93. His jazz/contemporary chops are nothing short of astounding, and are only eclipsed by his acid-spitting sense of humor. I mean the guy had us laughing our asses off half the time we were there, and the other half of the time, we were busy picking our collective jaws up off the floor with the musicianship being poured out. Just unreal.
The bass player is a blonde chick that has soul, chops and feel JAMMED up her a**. Unbelievably impressive. Les made a great joke about how he USED to have a male bassist, but now that he has a female bass player, he's gotta call it the Les Balls trio!! Funny as shit!! Equally impressive was the female singer he had as a guest for a couple of songs. The womans got SOUL, man.
The other guests were Jon Paris (ex-Johnny Winter bassist/guitarist/harmonica player), and he was excellent as well. Rick Neilsen from Cheap Trick also played a quick blues, but honestly, I think it was the general consensus that he wasnt that impressive. I thought Chief played MUCH better in the acoustic room at Manny's!!!
Well, anyway, it was just a really, really great time spent with a great bunch of guys, getting treated to some real musical history. I would strongly recommend anyone that has the opportunity to see this man in action to do so. He IS a living legend, and puts on a truly entertaining, professional, and flat out FUN show.
The one thing we ALL saw is that the man is just loving every minute he spends on stage doing what he does best: pouring it all out to the crowd, and getting it back in spades. I loved every minute of it, and hope to get the chance to meet up with you guys again (hopefully with some more forum members) and do it again while we can.
