We were looking at our collection of family pictures this evening and some old concert tickets were stuffed in the picture box.
Remember this?
Section D Row 19 Seat 13
Floor Seat
Iron Maiden
Sat, Jan 31 1987
$15.15
General Admission
Guns N' Roses
Wed, Dec 19 1987
$9.99
Handling fees at the time were sales tax only, and you had to wait in line at teh venue to buy them
Today:
Section 132 Row 42 Seat 4
Pavilion Seat
Judas Priest
Sat, Jun 25 2005
$44.95
The JP seats are all the way in the back of the venue two rows before lawn seating. three seats were bought online 14 minutes after tickets went on sale. All floor and front half of venue seating are reserved for scalping companies, promotional, and subscription buyers. Box office sales are made 9 hours after tickets officially go on sale.
Damn how times change I can guarentee that the JP show will not have all the HUGE stage show that was common place in the 80's

I was just thinking about ticket prices. I just bought tickets to Tom Petty and the Black Crowes(the real reason I'm going) and they were $55 for General Admission at Red Rocks in Denver. Red Rocks is nice, because for shows that allow general admission, general admission is near the stage or in the back. So you have to get their early to get good seats, but that's the way it should be. Nothing should be over $50,EVER!!!!!!!!!!!THE EARLYBIRD should get the best seats, not just the fatcats with big money.
I remember my first AC/DC show in 1985. Something like $12.50 for GA, we got their early and got awesome seats right near the stage. Now it'd be $100-200 for stage seats.
Although I'm not a huge Pearl Jam fan, I gotta give props to Eddie Veder for taking on Ticketmaster. It seemed like he was the only one for a while willing to take a stand on ticket prices.

Yeah ticket prices have gone through the roof. It's not like anything has really changed since back in the day to put on a show. Actually I would think that things are easier now seeing how most lighting and sound boards are pre set up and computer controlled.
Even club shows for semi major bands are rediculous. Lat time Slayer came through, tickets were $35 at the door. Back in the 70's-80's bands were making millions off sold out arena concerts. Now granted I know a bit about the business and the real money is made of merchandise, but still. The music industry wonders why arena concerts are usually a loss for business? Well duh!!! 18 years ago Iron Maiden played the San Antonio Civic Center (13,000 seats) sold out for $15.15 for floor seats. Now they have to play in the SBC Center or verizon ampitheater for $100+ for floor seats. $30 for general admission where you have to watch the jumbo tron to see the stage as those seats are above the pavilion roof.
Yeah Vedder did take on ticketron but look at them now... When was the last time you saw them touring large venues? Hell when was the last time they toured?

I wouldnt doubt for a second they got stiffarmed. If these other big touring bands werent so dickless or so fucking greedy that wouldnt be the case.

True. Just like those Clapton Tickets. I heard that some choice seats were selling for upwards of $1500 direct, not through a scalping company(best tickets etc..)

I would never pay that much for any concert. I would rather save the money, buy some gear with it, and then wait for the 5.1 DVD to be released. that way I could stay at home and get boozed up watching it.

Im all for supporting musicians but thats excess. Filling over filled bellies of famous musicians, promoters and venues. Id love to meet the person who pays $1k for front row Britanny Spears tickets though. Talk about being a polar opposite of myself.
