Counterfeit guitars -DHgate.com-BEWARE

Post by NY Chief » Mon Jan 18, 2010 2:03 pm

I didn't realize how big a problem this is. F'n Chinese.... :x
I talked to a Fender Custom Rep and a Martin rep at NAMM and they both said there is almost nothing they can do about it. Beware....

I learned this the hard way. A friend told me about DHgate.com. I took a look. They counterfeit almost everything! I let curiosity get the best of me and bought a GIBSON Les Paul Jr for $300. I got it. It says GIBSON on the headstock and MADE IN USA on the back!!!! :x  :x fukin BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!

The site holds money in escrow until the buyer is happy. I told the guy I was disappointed. It plays like crap, very buzzy and cheap parts (I expected to gut it and rebuild anyway). I told him my luthier wanted $70 to set it up so I asked how to return it. He answered that it would be expensive (natch) so I offered that I noticed his website has pics from NAMM and we could meet for an exchange. He offered to take $50 off the price so I did. Dunno what I'm going to do with it.

Chief, do you know where is this guy Steven Sexton from? I could swear I've seen him somewhere locally. It was kind of an instant recognition when I saw his pic, but I just cant place it. Not like I've seen him on TV... like I know him from somewhere.
I could be mistaken, but DAMN he looks familiar.

Googling him tells that he's from Lillington, North Carolina. I guess this helps not one iota though!

Yeah, fakes are everywhere.

A couple of years ago there was a guy here in Australia selling a Gibson Les Paul for $750 locally so I thought Hmmmmmm something doesn't add up at that price (Australian prices) but I thought I'd go and have a look thinking it might need major repairs or something and it turned out to be a Gibson Chinese fake.

I knew as soon as I looked at it that something wasn't right about it, with the cheap hardware and finish and look but I wasn't really aware of Chinese Gibson fakes at that time. I tried it out through his amp just out of curiosity and it played a bit like a cheap Epiphone I suppose and then I left without buying it.

Later on, when I found out about Gibson fakes the penny dropped and I then realized that it was a Gibson Chinese fake that I had looked at.

still......i wish i could buy a decent usa made historic 59 les paul for a " little less " than 3000 euros ....
if these chinese counterfeits could at least make gibson's ceos think of trying to sell guitars for musicians and not speculation pieces  ...... i mean 14000 dollars for a bloomfield .......come on :|

I bought one last year from a local dealer. He had 4 of them hanging in his shop. "Not a real Gibson" was on the tag. Gibson headstock logo, and "Made in USA" on the back. I never really played it so I took it back to see if he'd sell it for me a few days ago (need new amp parts).
I paid $350 for it with case. Since he had none left he put $450 on it. By the time I got home the end of the day, 4 hours later it was sold. $350 for me and $100 for himself. He's waiting for more to arrive btw......
As long as there is a market for cheap knockoff's, people will keep buying. Secondly, the quality of many of these is actually going up.
Learning to compete is hard enough in today's market, but when you are actually competing with your own product, your in serious trouble.
