Post by motrock » Sat Nov 27, 2010 9:30 am

Guys, other then EVH I am a HUGE Paul Gilbert fan. When I was a kid my first CD was Mr. Big's Lean Into It. Its been one of my all time favorite cds. Well.... after 14 years, Mr. Big is back. The new album is called What If...! It will be out January 11th. Today was the release of the new single called Undertow. Check it out:

It is amazing! I just learned a good portion of the tune Fuzz Universe itself. Still working on it! I have been working on Paul Gilbert stuff for years. I like jammin on Scarified!

Saw Mr. Big in '89 at Jimmy's Music Club in New Orleans. I was 19 back then . it was a free show, just had to write "WRNO" on a piece of paper to get in. Met the band afterwards. They were all very cool. Gilbert and Sheehan were very tall, well over 6 feet tall. Drummer and singer were much shorter. The next time I saw them they opened up for Rush, I think it was the Presto tour.
The thing I liked about the band was that the chops never outdid the melodies and hooks.

Is it me or did his lead phrasing change ever so slightly ? I hear Pablo of course, but, there's something...
hmm...I've seen him touring with Satchmo
RIP Mark Abrahamian-rockstah -classmate/roommate
RIP Ben Wise -StuntDouble- comrade-in-arms

Nothing else yet! Yesterday was the world premier of this tune and video. I am looking forward to this new album. And yes... Pauls phrasing and style has changed... but I think for the better. He can still shred our heads off.. more then Yngwie in my opinion. He has such a solid and heavy style of playing.

Wow, just checked out the video. Solid, solid tune. I like Paul Gilbert's playing here, it's rhythmic and swinging, some serious groove. I like the solo. As much as he can dazzle with sweep picking and all that, I love when he just goes for it with some blues-based licks.

Satchmo? Louis Armstrong died in 1971.
J/K, I think I know what you meant.

Paul is now rocking the newer pickups, and I have this feeling that the different sound has inspired him to diverge into some slightly different directions in his playing... so yes, I think you're right; there's some difference in his phrasing.
One thing about Paul; he can rip like noone else, but he's also got that quirky pop/old-timey/bluesy mentality merged in with his super-picker abilities, which yields that special style that both rips, AND holds onto melody/song structure and feel, as noted earlier in the thread.

Great stuff.

I couldn't tell what kind of guitar he was playing, it was some sort of Ibanez, with single coils?
He definitely had a Marshally tone going on, you know that brash, brassy midrange sound that he sure didn't have with his Laneys. Looked like he had a Marshall or two in the video.
I'm digging that new song. I have to wonder how well it will do, it sounds nothing like modern rock and Nickelback (a good thing!)

That's been connected to him (Joe) for as long as I can remember ...? Like Paul is to Pablo :what:
I'm thinking that Joe had a teenee bit influence on him on that tour.

Ibanez Fireman - Paul's newest signature model... and featuring his new signature DiMarzio pickups, the Injector neck and bridge stacked humbuckers... with an Area 'xx in the middle (I forget offhand which one).
Very different for him, but he's been experimenting with some singles in the neck position for a while on some tester PG model(s).

I want that guitar.... bad! Its super expensive. I am thinking about finding a builder that would be willing to build me a replica. I have all the specs and detailed photo's of the guitar!

That Fireman does look pretty cool. Like a reverse Iceman.
Paul has got such a wacky sense of humor, I love watching his videos. He seems like a complete guitar nerd! (A compliment, of course)
I like that he can totally shred yet he can play bluesy, he seems to have some deep roots in classic rock. When I met him in '89 we were talking about influences, he mentioned that he was always really into Angus Young. For a shredder to say that back in the salad days of shredding, that said a lot to me.
