Anyone using VoIP?
My WM has suggested looking into it. I may now that my internet troubles seem to be ironed out.
I do want to add an 800 number in the shop.
I thought I would also consult the excellent panel of experts here.

I know people who have it. They say theres only interference once in a greta while but otherwise it works great. I have noticed the interference, though rarely, its kind of a digital garble. Thoguh if you have DSL you still need to have a phone line for the DSL then a DSL IP and then VO. You would only vbe saving money then if you make a large number of LDs.

My brother has it. It's just great -- as long as your internet connection is good. His installer never came back to bury his cable, so it sat across an alleyway being driven on for months....ouch.....
Also consider that using VoIP, if you call 911 your address does not appear and doesn't trace right........so if there's a fire you could be in deep shit. But having it may save you a ton of cash on long distance even if you keep a regular phone line for local/911 calls.

I got the VoIP, and I'm happy with it. The equipment that I got with it comes with a backup battery so should the power go out, you still have phone.....for a while anyway. As far as the 911 thing, we got this notice to go online and update something our the provider web site to insure that 911 would work as it should. The only thing I hate is down here in florida, when the storms take out the power, I'm screwed!

I'd think twice about it. I've had VOIP for about 9 months and it's been pretty sketchy. I have the gold premium cable modem service from Comcrap and my VOIP still sounds like shit sometimes. There's echo problems, digital garble like a cell phone, the 911 issue, outside network problems, etc. You save some money but it really doesn't replace a landline phone, it's a cheap alternative that's about 75% as good as a landline.
