Shred guitars?
I'm currently playing a Gibson '78 RD Artist and it's a beast, feels like 15 pounds. I'm getting more into metal and shred and thinking about getting into an old Japanese Ibanez RG. What are people's thought on these and similar shred guitars...Jacksons, Charvels, Kramers, etc...are they even close to Gibsons for hard rock/metal?

I'm the original owner of a blood red Japanese made Ibanez RG strat style guitar that I purchased new back in 1986. It's my first "real" guitar. It's got a kahler style tremolo and a bridge humbucker that has the biggest set of magnets (rail type) I've ever seen on a guitar. I should measured them to see how hot these are. I've had a bunch of other players ask if I would sell them the humbucker because it looks soooo cool and massive. This guitar also weighed a lot for a strat style guitar. I think it weighs as much as a hefty Les Paul. Its tucked away somewhere in my closet and is still in very excellent condition. I only used it for a few gigs in the late 80's and then used it mainly for studio work back in the early 90's.

ibanez rg 550 or rg 750 ( these are the ones with pickguards) (560 has no pickguard) came with the edge tremolo. it is the shred guitar - usally of basswood body and maple or rosewood neck. these are the ones that have the square neck joint still. they were there in the early 80's when shred started and have that voice/tone of that style.
you find them on ebay and anything from the 80's is worth the purchase

I found this...looks promising for a beater guitar I wouldn't mind modding.
