Help loading XP clean install
You guys must wonder how I ever started an internet based business at all.
I need to install XP Pro on a disk drive which I have set the partition and formatted NTFS.
John from Sozo sent me an Iso of an XP disk which I have burned. But the comp won't boot to.
I have loaded bios defaults and I can start in DOS. I just can't get setup to run. What do I need to do in DOS to get it going?
Thanks for any help!
George
What a F'in week, I'm on day two with the main comp down. And, UPS tracking shows my JTM 45/100 as out for delivery. They usually show up at 10AM, it's 5PM and still no sign of them..... RRRRrrrrrrr.

something to try george in bios of that computer is make sure your boot disk priority is set to cd first priority- that is assuming the iso image you have is bootable infactVelvetGeorge wrote:You guys must wonder how I ever started an internet based business at all.

DOS can't see an NTFS partition, and the XP setup program won't run under DOS so getting a bootable XP cd is pretty much the only option. Check the settings in your cd burning software, could be something switchable. Though it's more likely that the program that made the iso just wasn't set to take a copy of a bootable and protected disc, or is incapable of doing it.

one other thing i thought about was that some machines arent able to boot from the cd and in this case you can,i think make some bootable floppies from that cd. its been so long since i was a computer geek - keep in mind you are going to need around 15-20 floppies for this purpose if you can do it this way...
assuming the only wrong with that iso of xp is that they didnt make it bootable

I realize this may be redundant and you may know DOS already but when you format your OS partition, you lose your CD-ROM drivers. The XP boot CD has generic drivers it loads during the install process to make the install possible. If the disk isn't bootable, you may not have the CD-ROM drivers installed. That's why it's always good to have the drivers on a floppy somewhere...just in case. Visit the support sections at the manufacturer of your CD-ROM to get the drivers and install them.
If they're installed, the next step would be to make the CD drive your primary boot device from the BIOS. If you've done that, and it's still not recognizing the CD, try accessing the files on the CD via DOS. Example, say "e" is your CD Drive, in DOS, type this at the DOS prompt:
e:
That will change you over to the drive if it's being recognized. If it is, then type:
dir
that will list the files on the CD. Look for an .exe file for startup and see if you can execute it via DOS.
