New Computer Build: Which CPU ?

Post by JimiJames » Mon May 28, 2012 1:45 pm

What do you advanced PC users think ?.... :what:

It's finally time to retire my Intel P4 3.0 (Prescott - Socket 775) and
build another Super Computer that will last me as long as this one did.
Everything is going from PSU, MoBo, RAM... Shutting down every 5 min get's on your nerves. :bang:
Narrowed it down to one of the RAM Sticks, but still having other start-up issues... Time to move forward...

For the MoBo. I'd like to get an ASUS MoBo P9X79 series.
teamed with i7 processor family for the Intel Socket LGA 2011 - Ivy Bridge
Or
ASUS : Rampage IV series
Or
ASUS : SABERTOOTH X79 series
One of these would be ideal.

I do a little gaming. (first person shooter like Call of Duty) and video editing.
ATI Radeon HD graphics : ???
Could be ASUS or SAPPHIRE
Doesn't have to be THE Top card, but something that can be overclocked to hang with the latest games...

Set on:
Corsair RAM
ANTEC or ASUS PSU
WD Velociraptors 600G's

Eventually, I will have a water cooled system, but fans for now are adequate in my Silverstone TJ05 chassis.

O.K.
So I went with :
Asus p9X79 Mobo
Intel i7 3.6 Ghz
Corsair 32g of RAM
Corsair Liquid Cooled Sys. (motorcycle radiator, lol)
Antec 750 power supply
Asus dual CD/DVD ROM’s

Yea, it was mucho dēnero and just for the i7 Processor was over $350.
The next one up from that was nearly double because it was “unlocked” like a graphics card... That’s Marketing for ya’. :palm:

Giving Win7 a try and forcing myself to learn this OS due to XP being phased out in 2014.
Mostly, my older hardware is headed for obsolescence.
I realize Intel is in bed with Mac for several years now, but dislike that MS wants too much to be like Mac.
Sure, I like Mac for certain stuff, but I find more programs I like to use with PC . Lots more venders writing aps/software for PC anyway...
(although a huge surge for Apple aps)
WAY too much foofoo flowery shit with Win7. Been using Windows since Win95 and really like XP Pro MCE 2005 which was on my last Super Computer which lasted me up until now. A Solid OS. I’m proud to say that I never touched Vista and with DELL saying that they wouldn’t offer any more support for that OS... well...at least Win7 is mo betta... :what:

This DEFINITELY was a major PITA. (& wallet)
Good luck to youz guyz if you hafta' go through this.
